Taiwan population decline

TLDR. By 2025 Taiwan will be considered a superaged society with 1 in 5 people over 65 Years old.

Interviewed a woman with her boyfriend, who said costs are too high to have kids.

These projections are stupid af. Fertility rate is equally low or even lower in other Asian countries. It’s typical clickbait headline.

In 2021, the fertility rate in Taiwan was estimated to be at 1.07 children per woman, making it the lowest fertility rate worldwide.

Taiwan 1.07
South Korea 1.09
Singapore 1.15
Macau 1.21
Hong Kong 1.22
Japan 1.38

South Korea is probably too close to be differentiated, but the claim as made appears to be substantiated. Taiwan and SK are definitely #1 and #2, though, whichever is first.

Hopefully this eventually leads to the Taiwan housing bubble deflating, allowing younger folks to afford a home. The inheritance tax is too low too.

I don’t even know where these estimates came from. In 2020 Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong all had a lower crude birth rate, and TFR was equally low in all 3 at around 1.1.

But anyway, it’s all fine as long as the headline attracts clicks.

No worries the government will fund 500 more free prenatal checkups for each citizen to increase fertility, ignoring all other problems young parents face.

The train has demographically left the station.
Negative cycle feedback has started as the number of young adults also drops precipitously .
If they want to reverse or slow it the only real way to do it is my opening up immigration.

Observe how at the same time as the middle age bulge moves into the older age group, the young adult numbers keep contracting.

The number of babies will keep reducing because there are less breeding age adults to have babies.

The only reason why European countries a higher TFR is because there are a ton of migrants from the Middle East and Africa. It is a FACT that Muslim immigrants are young and have more children. There’s a reason why Germany’s fertility rate has seen a substantial increase since the early 2010s.

Religious faith is by far the most effective way to increase natality in a developed country. It is not PC but it is the truth. Ireland and Israel don’t have a abnormally TFR because they are particularly awesome for children.

Interesting , Taipei minus 2 per cent is not a small amount.
It’s probably highly unusual for a developed capital city.

How about Australia ?
Not sure what you are arguing about exactly.

Wealthy countries can do mass immigration very quickly if required, so when they start to panic it will still be possible. Rapid mass immigration brings huge social problems, though, so it would be better if they start (or had started) relaxing immigration restrictions ASAP.

As you say, they aren’t going to breed their way out of it.

Only poodles are multiplying at a prodigious rate.

How’s that highly unusual? That’s incredibly common

Australia and Canada have tons of migrants from the Indian subcontinent, also a region with very high natality.

Even if the government were somehow able to get people breeding again, and it’s clear they are unable and/or unwilling to do that, they’d still have to deal with the small numbers of 0-24 year olds entering the workforce over the next two decades. They could double the birth rate and it would take 20+ years for things to normalise.

The 0-4 age group is currently smaller than the 70-74.

If this is the case
Which is not clear
What’s the problem ?

What problem?

If they are looking at fecundity then sub-Saharan Africa should be the target market.

I don’t think it matters so much how much the immigrants breed, more that they are of young working age, have workable skills and can adapt. SE Asians are a no-brainer. However, Indian engineers would also be great.

Political correctness ain’t got nuthin to do with it.

If you’re creating a religion and you want it to last for more than one generation, which of the following scenarios will make sure you have many followers for a long time?
a) god wants to bless you with many children. Children are god’s gift to you, therefore birth control goes against our beliefs and is a violation of the will of god.
b) always have protected sex/of course birth control is OK

You can see b playing out in the religion of the CCP. The gods of the CCP told them that exactly one child was the way to go and now they can’t convince anyone that three would be better. You can see a in every fundamentalist Christian household in America. Which one will continue its religion for many generations to come? Which is a better situation if you want to increase your national population?
