Yeah, if they use designs from 30 years ago. In binary cycle systems underground water won’t come in contact with the generator.

Then, please, where are those profitable binary underwater cycle energy plants in countries that do not site on a huge lava plume, like Iceland or parts of California?
Otherwise the whole darn planet could power itself like that, because every continent rests on the same liquid hot mantle.

But you need humongous amounts of energy to harvest, to offset the cost of maintenance for such a system.

Taiwan is sitting on a huge lava plume.

Turkey is currently the 4th largest geothermal power producer in the world at 1,734 MW. Kenya is the 6the largest at 985 MW.

Those aren’t areas that immediately bring the connection of a huge lava plume to mind.

with maintenance it is often a nightmare to navigate. The lack of a nation-wide standardization needs to be addresses

It seems crazy they don’t have nationwide standards or full alignment with certain jurisdictions. For instance in the medical area usually FDA/CE/GMP would be sufficient.

What is the connection between operating nuclear power plants (the topic of this thread) and “[n]uclear deterrent” (I presume you mean having nukes to attack the PRC if they try anything against us)?

I honestly don’t see that much of it.

I found these not by knowing where they are. I just opened google maps and looked for huge grey areas under satellite view.

Driving through pingtung this am. Not even a fraction of what I saw, an d that’s just next to the main road. It’s a common sight in the south.
Maybe just a 15km stretch?

Also, to be fair, lots of properly installed solar as well. Ie. Roof tops. This is chaozhuo train station from the #3

For those who care about life on Taiwan, I see them as a terrible risk and not as a “deterrent” in such a situation. I wonder what Oyster would say about this counter-claim.

Almost surely it’s about weapons, no? Taiwan agreed to not have them and got no securities in return. Bad deal. I’m not pro nuke, but om not pro Chinese invasion either. I cna understand the logic behind those that are pro weaponizing nuclear. We would probably be blocked from materials for our plants though if we did, I would assume.

Aaaargh! Geothermal energy is limited by the very fact that you can not simply drill into the earth’s core to extract it. There is a finite supply of energy being transferred to the upper regions of the earth’s mantle. Its finite because everything else leads to a volcanic eruption!

while the same poster claims that supporters of renewable energy are fearmongering when it comes to nuclear power.
