Taiwan Taxes

Only difference is that when you pay early, you pay cash, not by credit card.

I still don`t really understand why they have such a short regular “tax season”. Why not extend it to - say - April to June or something instead of just May…?

I think the online filing software is only available during the “official” period…

Apologies! When I mentioned “early” I meant following the regular tax filing schedule (between May 1 and May 31) and hence disregarding the now extended June 30, 2025 deadline.

Taiwan rent tax deduction no longer needs landlord consent

The Ministry of Finance said Thursday that tenants no longer need to receive the consent of their landlords to apply for a tax deduction, but they do need to present three key documents when filing.

Landlords said on Friday that they don’t need to receive the consent of the Ministry of Finance to boot tenants out later in the year when they find out, nor do they need it to increase the rent the next time tenants wish to sign a new contract.

My thoughts exactly!! Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Think of the deduction loss as part of the rent. :man_shrugging:

But I am curious how long it would take for your landlord to find out…

The whole idea that it would have required landlord “consent” is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve encountered over multiple decades in Taiwan. Are landlords King of the Tax Code? If so, who appointed them as such? What the hell!

This new initiative is long overdue. Let’s see what sorts of abuse follow . . .

You’re talking like you think that the landlords will be the ones paying the tax?

As I wrote, there may be various forms of abuse. I am uncertain whether the market will then reward or punish bad behaving landlords. How can we get something like an Uber star review system . . .

If you own your own flat, has there been a significant increase in the house tax this year? Mine just went up from 1.2% to 3.2%, which is quite a lot.

This seems to be the explanation. 3.2% if you use up to two flats yourself. If you rent out, you can apply for better rates. Used to be 1.2% if self-used.

But after watching the news it seems they sent out a lot of faulty payment slips in New Taipei City. Will go to the tax office next week to find out more.

If claiming it… does anyone have any idea when the landlord would find out?

You can now file up until the end of June

(Edit. I missed the earlier post)

Oh, thanks for asking - I meant to do the same. Ours is a lot higher this year: I don’t really understand how the form works, but it has one entry at 1%, and another at 3.2%? We only have one flat! This is in New Taipei.

Last year the same spot on the form had just one number, at 1.2%.

I’ll be following to see what you learn about possibly getting this corrected.

Can‘t wait to find out.

Going to the tax office today. Before that I tried to understand the new tax regulations regarding “house tax”.

According to this, the rate for single-appartment owners using the appartment for themselves should actually be less, from 1.2% to 1%. That correct?

Probably something similar to this: https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/

However, since the potential for abuse can be very high it would be prudent to require document verification before allowing a “rating” to take place.

For those who would rather upload documents than mail them to the tax office

Oh wait… in typical Taiwan fashion you can’t! Foreigners have to mail them all the old fashioned way lol.

Base the server outside of Taiwan. No jurisdiction to sue.
