Does anyone have experience traveling from Taiwan to Laos? It seems going through Kuala Lumpur is the only feasible route.
Suggestions?

Fly Taipei to BKK, take night train to Nong Khai, cross into Laos.
Have Laos visa first.

I did this a few months ago. Very easy, cheap, and the train is quite comfortable. There’s now a small train (that leaves just after the Bangkok train arrives) that will take you from Nong Khai into Laos. You don’t need the Laos visa first, as you can get them at the border. Whether it helps to get it ahead of time depends on whether or not you think you can manage to be one of the first to get your visa-on-arrival application turned in at the border
. I was through even before most of the people who arrived with visas
.
Although I suppose that taking trains from Bangkok might not be such a good idea these days?
You could also fly Bangkok Air or Lao Air from Bangkok. I also remember seeing flights on Vietnam Air, I think from Hanoi.
Fly Taipei to BKK, BKK to Luang Prabang, travel by land to Vientiane or Savannakhet, then cross into Thailand and overnight train (after a short bus ride) to BKK.
