Taiwan vs Hong Kong Lifestyle

Took my Blockbuster card and all.

No, wait, not mine. My friend’s. Yes that’s right. It was my friends card.

I’ve never even been to Dusk till Dawn…

For a single income family, if they are getting 70k per month, which is decent in Taiwan, forking out almost half of the income to housing isn’t ideal. But yeah, I realize it’s much much worse in Hong Kong ever since the CCP opened the flood gates.

I don’t want to hijack this thread but 70k/month for a family in Taipei is not decent. Average household income in Taipei City is 1.7 million/year in 2019.

You should be looking at the median income instead.

Median would be lower but not like 50% less. Maybe 300k less.

If you are getting median in HK, you would probably/likely be living in public housing(in which 50% live) - in which case you are not paying 50% on rent.

Public housing is dirt cheap in HK, about 2-300usd/month.

Taipei’s new public housing cost half that and has 3 bed rooms, and people are crying about how expensive it is.

Do they? I thought they cost 40k, though lots of people still seem interested.

Public housing is pretty pointless talk for the OP. He obviously wouldn’t qualify.

That would make for a good George and Elaine snigger.

He’s not even going to be working in Taiwan .

Talk about easy street !!

Someone has yet to explain to me how Western food is worse in Taipei than in HK. You’re paying through the nose to subsidize the restaurants’ sky high rent in HK, and long term the only places that can actually survive there are the big shitty chains (Spaghetti House et al) and the pompous Michelin starred joints in Central.

There’s an incredible amount of fantastic, varied Western (and Japanese) food in Taipei, but it requires you to not be your typical English teacher cheapass that expects a king’s meal for 200 TWD. 600-2000+ TWD gets you amazing value. Overall, Taipei has one of the best food scenes for a city of its size in the whole world.

My bad, I thought it’s more like 3000USD in Hong Kong.

I think in Hong Kong 300USD gets you 37m² which would be 11ping. The Taipei 3 bedroom public housing is 44ping with an actual indoor size around 26ping for 40k NTD, and 20k NTD for something more similar in size to what Hong Kong public housing is offering for 8k NTD.

Mildred?

Because it’s that bad. It’s mostly worse than the food from a Charles Dickens novel.

A bit of pity laugh for your troll effort.

:joy: that’s why every country has many Taiwanese food options.

Taiwan is famous for its food. :joy: only to Taiwanese.

I would say Western food in Taipei is at a decent level in 2020. Finally

Hong Kong was or is a global Westernized finance hub comparable to New York or London, Taiwan is a pretty provincial but beautiful island. If you speak mandarin then taipei is decent, but everything here is provincialish

In HK a 2000 NTD meal taste like a 2000 NTD meal in Taipei a 2000 NTD meal taste like a 500 NTD meal. There are of course exception. I’m not talking about chains.

If it was Europe comparing HK to Taipei would be like comparing London to Brussels
