I believe that I read somewhere (can’t find the reference anymore), that the USofA is planning to start charging US$450 to process a renunciation application. 1. Has anyone else come across this? 2. If true, do you think it would this qualify as mitigating circumstances so that the applicant for Taiwan citizenship would not have to renounce?

Yes. Effective July 13, 2010 the cost for renunciation of US Citizenship is $450 USD.

Renouncing one’s U.S. citizenship is a significant step that requires thorough and careful attention. We take seriously our responsibilities for ensuring that people know the consequences of their decision and that each case is properly handled. As a result, the adjudication of renunciation cases is very costly per case. The new fee of $450 helps cover those costs.

No, it is not.

Indeed, mine cost about the same, all things considered, and took 42 weeks to process. But I still had to do it.
