Taiwanese Civil Servants and Porn

In most Western and international companies, it is a big no-no to be caught watching porn on your office computers. In fact, some companies regularly monitor the computers of their employees and punish employees if suggestive things are found.

From my experiences, Taiwan’s civil servants seem to totally disregard the usual norms regarding work-place porn.

For example, when I worked in Taiwan’s international development agency, I was surprised by how many people sent each other porn videos and pictures through official work email. In fact, one person in the investment and lending section used to send people a lot of private pictures taken in hostess clubs in Taipei county and around the island.

Another person sent a gang-bang video taken at an American university. Accompanied with the attached video were vile statements on how “loose” foreigners are.

Any stories from people working in government here? I 'm not prudish when it comes to porn, but I would never feel comfortable watching or viewing hard core stuff at the office. If people at work send me attachments, I ususally forward them to an email account and view them at home.

Only top management can use the Internet at this ministry because they are paranoid about hackers. All mid-level workers can’t use the Internet at their desks. However, the powers-that-be (DPP appointments) don’t seem to mind people emailing porn to one another.

Then again, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the unaccountability. A accountant can screw up royally on annual bonuses, but is protected by “flesh” connections with a married man.

well, considering how dificult social relationships are in here, it is not that incredible to find out that guys have to relieve themselves at the office - it is the place where they spend their lives…

Not a government office, a private company, but there was a certain Miss Phwoor! as she became known and a vast circle of e-mail buddies insisted on getting on her regular mail outs. Incredible array of porn from the soft to ultra bizzarre weirdo muck. And all from a decidely attractive and otherwise seemingly innocent xiao jie.

Ah, the simple things that help you through the working day.

I was just surprised that a married person would feel comfortable sending lewd pictures taken at hostess clubs to colleagues at a work email address, brag about going to hostess clubs wth upper management within the organization, and talk openly about philandering.

And yet, these HQ people seem to hold the cards when it comes to judging behaviour of workers at the overseas missions. In the past, people have been reprimanded overseas for drinking. Yet, my DPP political appointee boss at HQ kept crates of Corona in his office.

Don’t get me wrong — I have nothing against drinking and fucking. But keeping open alcohol in the office (political appointment manager) or talking about going to dubious clubs with top brass (investment and lending program officer), or sending lots of people at work porn pics of hostess clubs through their work email addresses (same program officer), seems to be slightly reckless for a government organization whose mandate is to maintain diplomatic relations with allied countries.

Same with the annual bonuses. You would think that if every employee had to give back their bonuses due to an accountant’s error, that the person responsible would be reprimanded.

All I can say is… damn I wish I worked in Taiwan.

All I get in my company email is spam that manages to get past the filters and… work

You know, accounts receivable would be more interesting if I had hot female coworkers (of which I have none) sending me porn. :frowning: Some guys just don’t know how good they have it. Certainly its not professional and shame on the philanderer, but damn it, I want porn!

One of the first things that shocked me upon moving to Taiwan was the way hardcore porn CDs were often nonchalantly displayed for sale in run-of-the-mill variety stores, often right next to the Pikachu videos or the toy section. I’ve been in many stores here where these videos are easily accessed on low shelves in secluded aisles that would be a shoplifting mecca for any Western teenager. People here just don’t seem to find anything abnormal about porn. I just have to wonder though if little kids ever ask their parents questions like, “Mommy, why is this schoolgirl tied to a chair in the picture on this CD box?” Or maybe these videos are just laying around their houses anyway.

Taiwan moves in mysterious ways.

I’ve seen the same behavior in the offices I have worked. If it was particularly good all the ladies would stand around watching. I’ve also seen the same in international companies in Thailand. Different strokes I guess .

Right. The Diplomatic Corps of any modern state with any balls at all is filled to capacity with a pack of alchoholic degenerate inbreeders whose notions of ‘dilpomacy’ and ‘fair play’ are not much different from that of 17th century Privateers…
Where’s Sir Humphrey, when you really need him?
