Taiwans driving under influence of alcohol law

How is it?

Can you drive if you had one beer (or glas of wine - or even more). Or is it nothing at all?
is there a blood alcohol level in the new law, which I heard they inforced with the chinese new year. A more strict one?

I don’t believe in driving if there’s alcohol in ones system, but out of curiosity and better knowledge of this country, I’m asking you

thanks

The answer to your questions are here

Although, I was contacted by Taipei city government and was informed that over 21,326 people were charged with drink driving in Taipei from January 2006 to November 2006, but only 7,600 were succesfully convicted, so there a long, long way to go in terms of policing this enourmous problem.

Death toll due to drink driving.

2002: 4,322
2005: 4,735
2006: 5,000

I’ve had people here tell me “it’s ok to drink and drive as long as you don’t hurt anyone”. Furthermore, no one seems to understand that when driving on a two-wheeled conveyance, I have to keep my head really clear, so sorry but I can’t drink your beer.

Read my story about drunk driving here: http://www.blog.frostfox.com/?p=92

It’s kind of silly really, I mean it would be O.K. to drink and drive if it didn’t result in injuries and death. Think about this…the numbers I posted abover were drink driving fatalities and are some of the highest in the world, five times higher than Japan, but then those are just the fatalities, what about the severe injuries and trauma these weak, selfish people are causing?

It is a very selfish and silly thought.
They always say “I am clear just a cup of beer,I am fine…”
But in fact,they have drunk.
No one should be hurt because you drink .
My sister hitted by a car and injured seriously last year.Just because he drunk…

More people die from driving while talking on the cell phone than driving drunk. Obviously that’s not illegal in Taiwan or any country I know of, but it should be. Selfish, silly people…“It’s OK, it’s just a quick one minute call, I am fine…” until they hit and seriously injure or kill someone because they’re distracted by their mindless chit chat.

Handsfree is legal is both, although the distraction is the same whether you use one hand or two. You still won’t find me doing it because it’s stupid.

And you don’t have a car.

Talking on the phone while driving is madness IMO. In fact, some people I know get pissed off with me when I’m driving because I seldom talk. I prefer to concentrate on the road. There are few things more unsettling than being in the car with someone else driving and their cellphone rings from deep in one of their pockets, prompting them to contort themselves around in their seat while digging for their phone at 90kph. Crazy shit.

Does it ever bend?

<It’s The Amazing Randi FYI>

You mean one hand or none on the phone … right … because if you use two hands on the phone … how are you going to drive … :s

Nice link sulavaca, thanks!

scary thought that proberly many of them out there ALSO talk in their cellie while driving drunk…

I justed checked the numbers of deaths in traffic in Austria to get an impression. The rate is about 800 deaths per year there for all kinds of death in traffic. Austria has roughtly a third of Taiwans population (but a hughe amount of transit traffic as it is located in the centre of Europe). So just taking that figures it is already roughtly a 18 times higher rate, and 5000 are just alcohol related deaths in Taiwan, right? No idea how the big the whole number is than.
:astonished:

I guess if my relatives and friends get know to that they will stay away…

PS: Talking on the cell phone while driving (some allow this devices where you dont need your hands to phone) is prohibited all over the EU as far as I know.

… drunk bus/coach drivers, in the cities … taking turns … talking on the phone, having a smoke and chewing some nuts … while trying to drink some whisby …

Driving a car with one hand on the phone is dangerous enough, but driving with one hand on the phone on a motorcycle/scooter is much more dangerous. Those machines require two hands for smooth navigation and more importantly, braking. I foolishly found this out the hard way when eating and driving at the same time, and having to make a sudden brake when a car pulled out in front of me. I slid by barely missing hitting the car, trying to slam on only one set of scooter brakes (the ones on the right side; I had food in my left hand).

Sadly, I see morons do this all the time in Taiwan. I wouldn’t put it past some of them to try to text message and drive at the same time.

I’ll drive after two beers and a one or two hour wait to rehydrate and clear my head, but I never drink before riding a motorcycle.
My reason for posting this comment about drinking and driving is because of how absurd it sounds to American ears… You could never say such a thing where I come from without being shouted down.

You should drink ‘while’ driving … before you’re drunk you’re home

You know that was legal in a few of the states until a few years ago…

No problem, you’re welcome.
…and 5000 are just alcohol related deaths in Taiwan, right?
Correct!

Don’t even let me here anyone spread this one about, or I’ll track you down and twist your nipples. You know how some are just begging for such an excuse and that would seem perfectly acceptable and reasonable for some. :unamused:
