Taking a child to Canada Who is not your son

Hello,

I will be taking a Taiwanese child 11 years old to Canada with me this summer. I know that Taiwanese have visa exempt entry but I have two questions.

  1. Does the child need anything else to enter. Permission from their parents? Do I need to get a form signed by a lawyer?

  2. He has the correct passport. But He has no ID card because they receive ID cards here at the age of 18. Will this be a problem?

I would get his parents to do a Power of Attorney for you.

Download a travel letter of consent and get it signed by both parents. I think that should do it. Get it notorized to be safe.

Does anyone know where to get the letter notarized. Who need to come with you to do it?

I do this for my sons when an in-law takes them back to the US for a vacation. I have to go do it myself as the parent giving someone else Power of Attorney over my child or children. As an American, I always get it done at the AIT.

Nobody has ever asked to see it, but it’s good to have in case someone does or there’s an emergency that will require you to make a medical decision for the child. I’m sure there’s a lawyer around here who will do it for you. I seem to remember an English speaking one who used to post on this site. Do a search.
