Barry Marshall, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine, is currently in Taiwan and will give a special talk this Friday on his journey to become a Nobel scientist.
For those who may not know, Marshall won the award with his long-time collaborator Robin Warren for their discovery that stomach ulcers and gastritis aren’t caused by stress or diet, as was previously believed, but rather a type of bacteria. Their discovery meant that suffers no longer have to endure long-term antacid treatment and make drastic lifestyle changes, as now these ailments are treatable with a simple course of antibiotics.
The road to the Nobel Prize was not easy, as for years their theories were ridiculed by the medical establishment until Marshall himself swallowed a concoction of the bacteria to prove their case (which it painfully did). Nowadays their work is recognised as one of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine since the development of the polio vaccine.
