They better stop dragging their feet in the negotiations before more economic recessions etc play out internationally. Otherwise, there’ll be more casualties in the emerging regions.

> [@Bloomberg | Google Is Moving More Hardware Production Out of China](#):
>
> Alphabet Inc.’s Google is moving some production of Nest thermostats and server hardware out of China, avoiding punitive U.S. [tariffs](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-05-11/trump-s-tariffs-put-china-at-the-center-of-2020-re-election-bid) and an increasingly [hostile](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-05/china-fines-ford-venture-as-tensions-with-u-s-escalate) government in Beijing, according to people familiar with the matter.
>
> Google has already shifted much of its production of U.S.-bound motherboards to Taiwan, averting a 25% tariff, said the people, asking not to be identified discussing internal matters. While U.S. officials have pinpointed Chinese-made motherboards as a security [risk](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-30/super-micro-says-it-found-no-malicious-hardware-in-its-products), Google didn’t bring that up during discussions with its suppliers, they said. Tariffs have also pushed American-bound production of its Nest devices to Taiwan and Malaysia, the people said.
>
> The migration is taking place as companies both foreign and domestic seek to pivot their production away from China amid U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to reset the perimeters for global trade and manufacturing. Beijing is showing growing signs also of [clamping down](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-05/china-fines-ford-venture-as-tensions-with-u-s-escalate) on American corporations from Ford Motor Co. to FedEx Corp. within the world’s largest consumer market and production base.
>
> That’s prompting U.S. companies, long accustomed to using China as the world’s workshop, to explore alternatives. The Taiwanese contract manufacturers that make most of the world’s electronics, including Apple Inc. partner Foxconn Technology Group, have since 2018 accelerated the shift at their clients’ behest. Foxconn [said on Tuesday](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-11/hon-hai-has-enough-ex-china-capacity-to-make-u-s-bound-products) that it has enough capacity to make all iPhones bound for the U.S. outside of China if necessary, although Apple has so far not asked for such a shift.
>
> [Apple’s U.S. iPhones Can Be Made Outside of China If Needed](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-11/hon-hai-has-enough-ex-china-capacity-to-make-u-s-bound-products)
>
> While Google’s hardware production in China pales in comparison to the likes of Apple, its shift may herald a broader trend as tensions between Beijing and Washington escalate. The U.S. search giant earns some advertising revenue from the country and had explored avenues to court consumers and corporations in the world’s No. 2 economy, from sharing artificial intelligence tools to even a [censored](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/PQSP4YSYF01U) search service. It’s also lobbying Washington for permission to continue supplying Android to Huawei Technologies Co., the Financial Times has [reported](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-07/google-warns-white-house-of-security-risks-from-huawei-ban-ft).
>
> It’s widening its footprint elsewhere: Google [announced](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/terminal/POYE856S9728) in March it’s creating a new campus in Taipei and expanding staff on the island, though it’s unclear whether that’s related to its manufacturing diversification. Google declined to comment on production adjustments.
>
> Among the Google hardware saddled with higher tariffs, server motherboards are among the most critical to the tech giant’s operations. The company builds its own data centers in the U.S. and elsewhere. Those computing hubs help it offer search and productivity tools on a cloud services platform, and power the world’s largest mobile platform as well as services from mapping to search.
>
> And among major U.S. tech companies that operate so-called hyperscale or giant data centers, Google is keener than others including Facebook, Microsoft Corp. and Amazon .com Inc. to shift server motherboards out of China. That’s because it sometimes procures the components only, while its rivals tend to buy complete server racks from suppliers, one person said.
>
> Motherboards are categorized as printed circuit board assembly, which face 25% tariffs if they are imported directly into the U.S., while server racks as a whole have not yet been affected. Many U.S.-bound servers are assembled in Mexico, while there are also companies that assemble those locally in America.
>
> Chairman Simon Lin at Wistron Corp., which makes servers for Facebook and Microsoft, said on Wednesday it too is looking to shift some production away from China and perhaps to the U.S., but didn’t elaborate or specify which products.

Giant’s factory in Taiwan now has to run double shifts in order to catch up with the relocated orders. Tu said that “the era of Made In China and supplying globally is over.”

One can only hope.

“The company saw a record 9.8 percent spike in share value on Monday and its stock has been up by 80 percent this year, the highest increase in four years.”

Trump’s business tax cut has moved maybe, maybe nearly US$1 trillion in cash flow to the US.
Follow the cash flow and you see where the world feeks safe and unsafe.
Conversely, look at how ChiComms have tried to turn off their leaky outflows through all kinds of means.

It’s not just the tech giants, or 3C related manufacturers in general. I know people who work for one of the biggest manufacturers of diving material in the world, it’s a Taiwanese manufacturer and the have factories in several countries, including china, and this year they’re going to close the chinese factory. They’ll move all production to vietnam, thailand and cambodia, as well as Taiwan. They’re not a retail brand, they produce the goods for many well known brands in Eu, US and Au.
The tariffs, combined with the fact that labor cost in China is more expensive than neighboring countries, is costing the Chinese government an amount of money that is incalculable. And I mean that in a literal way, because most people just think about the lost tax revenues, but there’s also going to be tens or hundreds thousands people losing their jobs, losing a source of income, further reducing the government’s revenues and causing all sorts of social problems. That’s because people who have been working in factories all life doing jobs that require little to no qualification cannot evolve into doctors or engineers overnight; they’re going to be unemployed and looking for jobs in a shrinking market.

It looks like after his latest talk with Xi, Trump decided to skip the extra 300b in tariffs, but the 250b are still enough to hurt china in a way that will probably make them wish they wasted less money on rusty carriers.

And that’s assuming the talks between the US and chinese team will go well, because it happened in the past that Trump said:“Oh yeah we had a nice talk, all good” then when it came down to actually talking moneyz everything went South and Winny Pooh got buttraped.

Whatever you may think of the Man, Trump appears to be effective in term of putting the brakes on China .
China is such a huge economy and so tightly controlled , it can limit the effects in the short-term , but some of the measures in place will have far longer term implication for Manufacturers in China .
Even if T “appears” to be giving concessions in the talks , the damage is done to the Banks, money supply, currency , property , … maybe needs a major rethink in China . Much bravado , but I think China is just starting to realize how dangerous this could be for them in the long term.
It also serves to weaken their hand in other areas like HK, Taiwan , 5G, S. China Sea, Silk Road …I love it .

@mokkie, one thing to realize, when FDI leaves, so does the technology transfers that came with it. i believe those are just the tip of the iceberg.
100s or 1000s more of SMEs will be leaving too.

Again, China is losing technology transfer when FDI skedaddles

My opinion is that the long -term damage is going to make China have to innovate and design . That is good for them , but they may well start to fall behind in that race because tech moves way too fast to catch up . There are a few areas where they are ahead of the game , but the isolation may well affect advancements. Manufacturers will go for low costs … until the politics become a riskier proposal . I see the same scenarios possible in Vietnam , India Pakistan … politics there are questionable … when the chess board games draw to a close , I suspect manufacturing will migrate to stable countries . It will just take time to figure out which ones are stable 🙂

Fortunately for Taiwan , the US seems to be enforcing ties …guess it may all depend on which way Putin goes , but Russia is not what it was . I shall remain calm 🧐
