TB cluster at NTNU

Again

Heads up for international students coming in: with the hot and humid summer months, infections spread at dorms and classrooms quite quickly. Rest, hydrate, in case of doubt wear a mask. Do not rent rooms underground -ground zero for this kind of infections.

[quote]Taipei, June 1 (CNA) A cluster outbreak of tuberculosis (TB) infection is confirmed to have taken place in National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), with eight people showing symptoms, the Taipei City Department of Health said Wednesday.

The university reported a confirmed TB case last December and a follow-up skin test of 176 people in close contact with the patient found 68 of them had been infected, according to the department.

Common TB symptoms include a lasting bad cough, chest pain, and even coughing up blood, as well as weight loss, poor appetite, weakness or fatigue, and fever, according to Huang Chi-ching (黃繼慶), deputy head of disease control at the department.

As of May 31, CDC statistics showed Taiwan recorded 4,212 confirmed TB cases this year, while total number of cases for 2015 stood at 11,373. The disease has caused 31 deaths this year.

Does anyone know how to get a vaccine against that here?

Can’t you go to the General Medicine department of a hospital and ask for one? I’ve gotten vaccines like that before.

Just did, they said the vaccine is only for children. Nothing for adults :frowning:

TB vaccine does not work very well for adults (or children, for that matter).

annoyingly it will also give false positives for any TB test afterwards too, so best avoided.

I thought everyone had the TB vaccine when they were kids ?_?

The vaccines you receive as a kid depend on what country you are from, and also your parents intelligence, or lack there of.
