Tea Party thread 2 moderation - Chewy collateral damage

Maoman told me to ask about the moderation here, not in the thread itself as that is off-topic.

I’m really pissed off, angrier than a mob of tea partiers.
I just wanted to know who deleted Chewy’s post and mine. Maoman has already told me by PM that he changed some of my other posts.

Being identified with Chewy and TC really sucks on these boards - your posts get temped, deleted and edited, and you have a much better chance of suspension.

Ah, things used to be quite different in the good old days. I was part of the in crowd. Well, never really been part of the ‘in crowd’ as I’m not in Taipei but I could see ‘in’ from where I was.
On a couple of occasions I threatened physical violence against posters. Didn’t even get a slap on the wrist. I more than sometimes wrote infective filled drunken rants - once again it went under the radar.

The funny thing is that I’ve actually cleaned up my act - I only very rarely post drunk nowadays whereas it used to be the norm. I’m trying to stick to a 11pm curfew on forumosa.

God, I’m rambling like a muddy basin.

Anyway, I think I should cut down on the time I spend on forumosa. Tomhill sent me an e-mail saying that he’s finished with the site. I understand where he’s coming from.

Or, I could ditch Chewy and Tainan Cowboy as net buddies.
Right wing nutjobs!! Haters! They led me astray. Fuck it, I don’t even like tea! Screw them.

Now, where’s my bandanna? And where did I stash my Al Gore poster?

Where’s my bottle?

If you’re too drunk to even FIND the computer, your posts probably won’t get temped, deleted or edited.

Word from the wise.

Hey yo, take a chill pill. Dont let chairman mao get you down

Theres a select few who skate on thin ice, the price of “frame” on furimosa.

Born under a bad sign on the wrong side of the tracks. Plus, you shag sheep. Hang with knobs and you’re gonna get libbed. Snip snip!

As my dear old gran used to say, “sleep with dogs, wake up with fleas”. I’m sure there’s a foot and mouth equivalent more applicable to your situation, but I just can’t think of it at the moment.

HG

Plus, its a bit much grouping poor TC with someone like Chewy! They are NOT cut from the same cloth at ALL! :no-no:

One is in spandex, and the other lederhosen?

God, i read that as “it’s a bit much groping TC…” :astonished:

Thanks Tommy.

[Chewycorns]typical Liberal response.  :loco:

you obviously forget (incident where liberals did something similar to what you are complaining about). :astonished:

the hypocrisy here amongst the tree hugging, global warming, baby killing, socialist set is pure comedy.   :bravo:  :roflmao: :roflmao:

though I shouldn’t expect much from you and your second rate, shoot for the middle, mediocre secondary education. :cactus: :lick:

it seems the backpacking English teaching anglophone diaspora that gathers in Taiwan is unable to think critically about anything. :unamused:

what would you expect from a bunch of prairie drop out burn out losers used to social welfare.  :ponder:

I missed the old days when the expats were of greater repute. :sunglasses:

Even though you could conceivable substitute everyone of my posts for another of my posts and there would be ZERO analytical difference, I am far and away the ONLY (sorry TC and Fred) thoughtful person on this board. :cactus: :astonished: :notworthy: :discodance:
Oh yeah, Fuck Canada! :sunglasses:   :bravo:  :notworthy: :unamused:   :cactus: :2cents: :discodance: :roflmao:  :hand: :fume: [Chewycorns/]

I still love you, Mr Almas. But then you never post in H&F and Pets.

IP tends to be a zoo. As anyone who spends anytime on IP knows, if you post insults, off-topic content, rule-breaking stuff, it gets deleted. This is something that we’ve had to implement for the IP and TP forums. In other forums, people manage to stay civil. Civility is harder to maintain in IP, and the moderators do a stellar job in keeping things as polite as they are.

The only time I’ll ever send something from the IP forum to the moderator viewable flame forum is if I want a post to stand as part of a poster’s permanent record. This usually involves ugliness between two posters that is beyond the pale. Otherwise, “zap” - it gets deleted, as did Chewy’s post and the post that quoted his. A couple of your posts had some other content so I took the time to edit out the bad stuff. You’re welcome, btw.

With regards to TH’s departure, he was being a drama queen. He felt that I should have quelled discussion on the drunk hit and run driver, and he sent me a fairly snarky e-mail telling me so. Tant pis! He can come back if he wants to. Or not. I’m not going to let the moderation of the site be held hostage to one poster’s mood swings. And if people want to communicate with me, they’re always welcome, but they’ll find that a civil tone begets a civil reply. I don’t respond to nastiness in kind, I just ignore it. It’s beneath me.

Posting drunk implies a lack of control/restraint. With the notable exception of Lord Lucan, drunk posters are not welcome on Forumosa - they just create extra work for the mods, cause trouble, and then later blame it on the bottle. :unamused: Frankly, your posts haven’t been a problem at all, so I wouldn’t worry about “cleaning up your act” too much.

Finally, cutting down flob time - it’s a good idea if it’s driving you nuts. Some people handle it well, others don’t. Only you can judge. I get quite moody/anxious if I spend too much time in a crowded environment. On flob I’m mostly fine. I sure don’t mind turning off the computer from time to time. I read a book the other night for almost an hour and it was a great time!

Thanks for the detailed feedback Maoman.
I’m sorry for the time you had to spend on the thread. However, I still think Chewy’s post was fine, but as evidenced by the previous posts there is an enormous amount of hate directed at Chewy. I will just have to accept that i have a minority - dare I say “fringe” - view when it comes to the Sage from the Great White North.
Chewy likes to stir shit but I really do like his posts - he has a strong passion for and knowledge of politics, and he takes the abuse that is dished out to him better than anyone else here. In real life, he’s contributed a lot more to the foreign community than many others who talk a good game.

If you stand near the man, you’ve got to expect a few lightning strikes. Kind of reminds me of this guy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Sullivan

HUH?

How did I get dragged into this?
I’s innocent…innocent I swears!

HGC…go back to chasing monkeys. They’ll pick yer fleas off and love ya for the snack… :lick:

As to this group…

I almost never join groups that would have me as a member.

Is that a real serape or a “SEARS” serape?

I am still curious as to why the post was deleted. It has basically been replicated again by me in the Tea Party thread. The original post just asked about the hypocrisy of Forumosans more directly. It’s a fair question. It didn’t single out any poster in particular and the youtube video really illustrated a point. When compared to most of the posts in IP, it was rather tame. That’s why Almas and I were curious that it got deleted. Out of all the posts that do get deleted, we would never have guessed that this one would be removed. Perhaps, reviewing the video, the moderator realized the hypocrisy and was angry at the video for hammering the point home.

Completely (but respectfully) disagree with Maoman on this one. No comments in that post were beyond the pale. It was quite moderate as Almas also alludes to in his post.

The post brought up a very relevant point to the debate. Why did so many Forumosans laud the protests against GWB (the nastiness very accurately represented in the youtube video) when there were just as many fringe people making very nasty remarks at those rallies? And why are they so vocal in their criticism now of the Tea Party activists when the same type of lunacy has been going on for years. Little slow are they in realizing the double standard?

Why am I not surprised?

Why not be honest about the bias?

Sad that the moderate voices seem to be silenced on the thread

You like Deuce Dropper’s type of humour Sandman? What’s next? Watching Coronation Street and going to Costa Del Sol on a package holiday? :roflmao: :roflmao:

And Deuce, the ignorance in your post is astounding. I’ve always been pro-choice and quite liberal on social policy. Care to find one post where I’ve called abortion murder? Won’t find it.

In fact, when Hillary Clinton was talking in Canada this week about the importance of family planing/access to abortion and staying longer in Afghanistan, I agreed with her side more than with other more conservative governments. :sunglasses:

Sorry I missed the video in question.

I openly admit my bias toward liberal/progressive thinking, but in my opinion there is a difference in vehemently protesting an invasion, which has killed thousands and wounded tens (hundreds?) of thousands of soldiers, not to mention innocent bystanders, vs vehemently protesting non-existent issues like a foreign born president or death panels. Some may chalk both of them up to the notion of “free speech”, but remember our “right” to free speech only says the government can’t pass laws against it. That doesn’t mean private citizens can’t call you out out on what;s been said/written.

As for forum moderation, at the end of the day, this board belongs to the person who set it up and runs it. That person is entirely justified in setting the rules. We have no “right” to be here and no “right” to post whatever we want. If that person’s politics are left-leaning and if there is a left-leaning bias on the board, so be it.

When I was in another industry back in the US, there was a board run by a trade magazine. The members were largely very far right-wing and when tempers flared after the invasion of Iraq, I left the board. I didn’t stomp my feet and insist the owner of the board tone down the right-wingers. It’s their board and they can run it any way they see fit and I had/have the option to participate or not.

So if you believe this board is too left-leaning for you, there is nothing that says you have to participate. If I felt this board were too right-wing for me, I probably wouldn’t.

As for personal attacks, I’m sure I’ve also let my temper get the best of me and let one fly, but I do make every effort to stick to the facts of the matter and stay on topic.

CraigTPE, your missing my point. In both events (despite the worthiness of the cause or not), protesters are going overboard by writing very nasty things and making racist comments. Shouldn’t that be criticized in every instance, not just when you don’t agree with the politics? If so, why so much silence back then on the displays of boorishness on the left?

And you can look at the video in the IP thread, Tea Party Part II.

As for your comments on leaving the board, this forum has often called itself the voice for taiwan’s expat community etc, Taiwan’s expat online community etc. If it is casting such a large net, shouldn’t it take into consideration all of the political voices that make Taiwan’s expat population so diverse? Don’t the leftist people often say “together we’re better”. Well, perhaps more people should live that mantra, no? I enjoy listening to other perspectives, so that is why I don’t mind posting ‘against the grain’ on this board. It is too bad a lot of others don’t seem to value the same balance or fairplay. You’re right–there are some forums that have a definite partisan edge --but they don’t claim to represent a whole community in a country, do they?

there was a video a few years back of Admin at a happy hour being interviewed by a local TV station. In it, Admin listed off how great Forumosa.com was, listing the great variety of people, straight, gay, North American, European, Asian, etc…and liberal and conservative…and how ALL were welcomed and protected by the rules.

But in IP in particular, the bias is so heavy that those conservatives really do not feel welcome at all, not that they stop posting or anything. I know a bit about this.

Some people actually do come into IP to discuss issues, but a majority of the threads get sidetracked by partisan bickering. The bar is so low that a simple :loco:  :roflmao:  can totally derail an interesting thread.

That sucks.

Long ago, 914 started a thread “Have you tasted IT?” in D&R. The thread was flamed and admin stated, there are places on the web for such discussions. Forumosa.com is not one of them. I get that, and it goes to what you have written. It’s their site.

I’m curious to why IP hasn’t received the same banning? Very very little good ever comes out of IP. Snarking at people online that you know IRL and are cordial with…is just bizarre.

That, I don’t get. :2cents:
