Teacher shortage coming?

As the school year nears its end, and teachers return home, but the paranoid types who take in all the SARS hysteria are put off coming to Taiwan, is there going to be a big teacher shortage do you think? The Canadians can’t even come if they want to (at last someone had the sense to keep them out  ). Or maybe it will all haveblown over and be as forgotten as the Ebola virus by then? What doyou think?

Brian

I don’t really foresee a teacher shortage. I think the economy is the big thing to look at instead of this SARS virus. If SARS starts affecting exports, then I will be very worried. There will be the usual scramble for teachers at the beginning of the year, but I don’t think it will affect our pay at all.

Some people will leave Taiwan because of SARS

Some people will come to Taiwan because of SARS

A lot of people will tell their friends back home that SARS isn’t a big deal and to come over. As far as Canadians, when have you ever known a Canadian that didn’t know someone from back in Canada who lives in Taiwan? If you met one, let me know because in the short time I’ve been here. I haven’t met one. Canadians are only facing a 10 day quarantine. Their other choices are Japan and Korea. Who knows how it will work out.

Those Goddamn Canucks!

Why the hell do they like Taiwan so much anyways?

Where they heck do they hear about Taiwan from?

I sometimes feel like Canadians are taking over the Island.

Back Packer: You don’t know the ‘plan’ ? Shhh… When the time is right, we are going to attempt a coup and declare Taiwan the 4th Canadian territory. Don’t tell any Americans though, they’ll want to get in on the action. They always spoil our fun! Long live Queen Liz!!!

Aha, ha, haa!!

And the New Zealanders… , there seems to a lot here for such a little country. There’s at least 2 on Forumosa, the same as the entire South Island.

too true :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :unamused:

Socialist like welfare gov’t. with low taxes, lots of easy women, cheep beer and cigarettes, and no freezing winters. :stuck_out_tongue:

US gov’t program to get enough of them out of the country so we can easily take it over. They can then have Japan. South Korea and Taiwan for a couple years before we do the same thing again. :smiling_imp:

Delusions of grandeur :unamused: , Americans actually outnumber Canadians on Taiwan. Though we are outnumbered by Japanese, thankfully they haven’t adopted an expansionist policy since we had a talk with them about it last time they tried that Pax Nihon no crap.

Nice to see our propaganda is still effective/working. Royals are always the first to flee a country when it’s taken over. They are pretty useles except as tourist attractions. Shame we lost the Emperor of the US. We could really use someone like him right now. Alas he died childless.

The plan is progressing well, except for the SARS incident. We’ll of course portray the taking of Canada as a liberation of our CBC brethen by the stout ABC. Have you ever noticed how the most outragious foreign born Chinese are from the US? Easily manipulated, they just need to see the “need” of liberating their CBC brethren.

Long Live Pax Americana,
Okami

Excuse me as I wrap myself in a US flag to deflect any petty insults. :sunglasses:

This is just weird logic… There’s an infectious disease that’s not so bad. Come over to check if I’m right.

I will bet money with anyone that there will be less teachers in Taiwan in the coming year, even with those 900 extra teachers for the public schools.

BTW, this is a good opportunity to purchase things from other foreigners who are leaving the country.

Because it’s very NICE and we make a lot of money here, and we don’t want YOU PEOPLE to take over.

We hear about Taiwan from people who end sentences with prepositions

Hmmmph! :unamused:

I think there will definitely be fewer teachers in Taiwan over the next few months. This will be because some people will leave, but probably more because others won’t come. It is likely those that had planned to come to Taiwan would currently be postponing their trip or choosing another destination.

Whether this amounts to a teacher shortage though I am not sure. A bigger problem could be a student shortage. Students are going to be less likely to enrol in classes at the moment and there is always the risk that the government could close down buxibans to stop the spread of SARS. See this Taipei Times article: Close bushibans, lawmaker urges

How embarassing. How TOTALLY embarassing…

Yeah, I think a student shortage will be most likely what hurts us.

But invariably more Canadians will come to Taiwan.

Come on now ‘grammarian’, now you’re just being childish, eh?

Ha, aha, haa!!

So ARE teachers leaving because of SARS ?

I’m not…yet.

None of the teachers I know are thinking of bolting…yet.

YET!

Damn it - I thought you were one too. The cow avitar is what does it.

Kiwi and proud of it

No you’re not! You escaped from the San Diego zoo. :unamused:

Maybe those who teach, if a shortage does come, will find themselves getting higher pay. Supply and demand, babies. It hasn’t changed much over the past fifteen years, but the price of cigarettes and taxi rides have.
You remaining proud few should start demanding $1500/hour at the very least.
