Do you have to hold a passport from a “native speaking country” to be able to teach in Taiwan? I have seen lots of ads indicating that you have to be from US, Canada, UK, etc. to be able to apply. Does that mean if I hold a passport from a country other than these that… I cannot work legally as a teacher in Taiwan… even if I am fully qualified (academically)?
Sad but true. You need a passport from a country where English is the official spoken language…
Is English your first language, Grasshopper?
sounds weird, but according to the MOE regulations, only the passport holders (not diploma holders)) from those 6 countries (US, UK/etc) have the right to teach english in taiwan… does it mean that locally trained taiwanese english teachers who don’t have US/UK/AUS…etc passports, are not qualified to teach english here…??? this system is really stupid …
Hi,
Further to the topic, but from a little different angle.

You can certainly teach legally as a non-native speaker of English, but only if you are willing or able to actually teach your own native language, whatever that might be. It seems logical and fair to me that foreign English teachers who teach English in Taiwan should be native English speakers. Considering the fact that most foreign English teachers here actually teach only conversation English, an indepth knowledge of grammatical rules takes a back seat to conversational abilities.
Todos - The regulations that you are referring to only apply to foreign residents. Of course local Chinese can teach English whether they have studied overseas or not, but in most cases they will need to prove a certain proficiency in the language to be able to land a job. This proficiency is determined at school level and has nothing to do with the authorities.
IN TAIWAN — What is the deal anyway?
The MOE has a list of “countries” whose PASSPORT carrying citizens are considered qualified for English teaching jobs ?
- OR -
The MOE has a list of “countries” whose B.A. (B.S.) DEGREES are accepted to prove that the degree holders are considered qualified for English teaching jobs ?
Can anyone clarify the exact details?
