Teaching my native language in a buxiban

Hi there!

Some time ago the MOE had issued a regulation which said that foreign full-time employees for teaching foreign languages can only teach their native language and must have a university degree or higher.

This regulation seems to be abolished by now (according to the MOE website). But are there any other regulation which can prevent me from teaching my native language (not English by the way) as a part-time teacher in my wife’s buxiban?

I don’t have any university degree, btw.

Unfortunately the regulations on the MOE website are mostly in Chinese only.

Here is my situation:
I am married with a Taiwanese and have an ARC based on that marriage. The teaching is not my primary job, I do this merely for fun and to earn a little pocket money on weekends… :sunglasses:

Now it happnes that there is another former buxiban teacher who left the school due to personal disagreements and who is keen on hurting the school’s business for revenge.
I’m a bit worried that that said person could use my lack of university degree to frame me or the buxiban owner.

Are there any other regulations which could be used against me or the buxiban owner?

I don’t understand enough Chinese to read the regulations myself and my wife is not a legal expert… so she asked me to ask for advise here.

Hello there,

  1. As a person with a marriage-based ARC, you’re allowed to work in the free and clear.

However, in the case of teaching and the MOE, it gets tricky because they seem to have conflicting rules and regulations that are at odds with the Employment Law.

  1. My recommendation to you is to contact the Council of Labor Affairs. They have English speaking staff members who can better clarify your working situation and your wife’s buxiban issue with respect to teachers.

  2. Your wife’s buxiban business liability may be affected by the type of license and languages it’s registered to teach. You can ask your accountant about that.

An excellent resource you may contact are the people at Buxiban.com.

Good luck.
