I’m looking for a team sport to take my son to every weekend. He’s 8 and full of energy Any advice appreciated. I’d prefer football/soccer but would consider anything. We live on Chunghsiao sec 5/6 and don’t mind travelling a little but would obviously prefer something in our neighborhood. Thanks.
Have you considered Ice Hockey? I can put you in touch with a couple of different clubs that teach young ones the coolest game on earth.
Haha. Toe Save - you must be Canadian I guess! Ice Hockey does look awesome actually and I’d like to see him hit the ice sometime but as a Kiwi I’m leaning towards football/Soccer as a first team sport (just as many Kiwis play football as rugby, though we’ll never be as successful with football as with rugby due to our marvelous men in black).
It’s much easier to grab a ball on the weekend and have a hit around at the local school. End of the day though, it’ll be my son’s decision, so ice hockey is a poss and the Arena on Nangking (is that the only ice hockey venue?) is within reach. Details/links would be appreciated and maybe we can swing by and check it out before we make our final decision.
try these guys: mfa.tw/team.php shoudl be just what you need.
There’s a free Saturday morning kids’ rugby group that currently meets at Songshan High School. I’ve been a few times, and it’s a very nice welcoming group. The coach speaks English and Mandarin to the kids, who seem to be between 5 and 10 years of age. Here’s their Facebook page:
Also, if you wouldn’t mind going out to Banqiao, a friend of mine will be starting football classes for kids on Sunday mornings, beginning Aug 5. Here’s their website:
How about basketball? Seems to be popular enough in Taiwan based on the number oof courts I have seen at schools, parks etc. Very low investment needed - a ball and a court. Lots of running and jumping. Small number of people required to play making it easier for leagues to form or for pick-up games involving 1-5 players per side. Unfortunately, I can’t speak for the number of organized basketball leagues for little ones around Taipei or taiwan in general.
Thanks for the ideas all.
Have joined the angrybirds kids rugby Sat morning, which gives my lad a good work out. May check out some ice hockey on Sundays as well.
Cheers.

The Angrybirds…awesome name.
Re: Hockey. The league will be starting Sunday nights in a couple of weeks but imo, the best demonstration is 3 on 3 hockey on Tuesday nights. We play at Polar Bear in XiMenDing at 10PM (will be switching back to 9PM soon though) and I can introduce you to a few coaches that specialize in kids. I think a lad named Kevin Yu is the best choice for a coach followed by The Silver Monsters who have Saturday morning and Monday evening sessions. We also play at the big rink on Thursdays at 11PM but that may be a little late for you family guys.
If you show up at either of our sessions, just ask anyone who I am. They all know me by my online moniker.
But angrybirds… :roflmao:
