I am looking at an offer to work in TW (personal reason).
The proposed salary is about 70,000 NT. So I was wondering how much a midly experienced english teacher makes per month.
I am a young engineer but 70,000 is considerably less that what I make in EU.
In EU, I save about 1000 EUR per month => 40,000 NT
I am looking in renting a 25k appartment, my gf will share half the price, so the cost of renting will be 12,5k.
Do you think 17,500 NT is enough to live per month ? With that I have to pay : (half) electricity, water,…, food, going out
My goal is to be able to save the same ammount than in EU.
It’s a nice company so remarks about working hours, bad work environment,… doesn’t apply

Perhaps for a month but not for the long term. Taiwan isn’t that cheap after you add up transportation costs, food, TV / internet/ coffee / trips /life stuff. If you had a cheaper place – ~5k/mo – your budget would work, I think.
Saving is good, but more than 50% of your wage seems a bit too much , no need to outdo it. Maybe set yourself a 35 to 40% target instead then save whatever remains at the end of the month.

Don’t worry. With the Euro crumbling, it should be easy for you to save the same amount as in the EU. Btw, EUR 1000 is currently NTD 37,600. And yes, around NTD17K per month for one person should be enough to live in Taipei, IMO.
I want to save so much because of some future projects. Also the house price in EU can be ridiculous sometimes, I don’t want to be tied for 40 years by a mortgage. The more you bring upfront, the shorter the mortgage.
Of course, I know above 50% of wages saved is huge but it is just a target. I don’t always succeed in respecting it. Cause you also have to enjoy life !
For those who think that 17,5k is not enough. How much do you think is needed ?
Finally, I had no reply about a teacher pay. Could somebody vaguely tell me how much they make per month ?
The EU is a big place with a range of different cities. If you currently reside in London or Paris, the housing prices can be ridiculous. Not so, if from Bucharest or Sofia.
Hi I have just done exactly what you are considering. You don’t say what your personal reasons are. For me I am very happy to be here with my girlfriend.
I am very happy about the job I have managed to find. I was lucky and I think it should be interesting and helpful for my career.
I admire the computer industry in Taiwan. I remember when the UK was a credible player in computing, however the UK government has always failed to capitalise on that. Not so here.
The salary you found sounds in line with market conditions, it depends on your experience I guess. I found glass door to be a useful resource for finding out typical salaries here. Looking at glassdoor, it seems your need to work for a US company like IBM or Google to get anything like a western salary. I had to take a substantial paycut too.
However the cost of living is lower here, and renting is substantially cheaper, in Jhubei at least.
Don’t move here thinking property is cheaper though! I just sold a three bed house in the UK, but with the proceeds I could only just afford a new three bedroom flat here of the same size.
