Terrorism in Toronto
In a sweeping raid, police arrested about a dozen men in the Toronto area on terrorism-related charges Friday night, the RCMP announced.

Intelligence sources allege the men were part of a terrorist cell, close to carrying out attacks on one or more Canadian targets.

Police seized chemicals used to make explosives and weapons.

“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage,” a source who asked not to be named told The Canadian Press.

The suspects are either second-generation Canadians or recently immigrated to Canada with their families.

Sources claimed the men have no connection to al Qaeda, but were allegedly inspired by militant Islamic groups.

Though unconfirmed, sources have told Sun Media police arrested an al-Qaida cell operating in Toronto that had planned to bomb the subway as early as Monday.

Just three days ago, Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington wrote about two men spotted filming the subway system May 23 at Keele station, which raised alarm bells with Toronto police and CSIS.

Another source also tells Sun Media the arrested individuals were amassing weapons.

“This is huge, this is massive.”

The enforcement team also includes GTA police forces and the department of justice.

Officials remained tight-lipped about the nature of the arrests, refusing to reveal the number of people arrested, who was arrested, the nature of the terrorist activities, when or where the arrests were made.

Reports peg the number of arrests at eight and also say about a hundred officers were involved in the bust.

Meanwhile, a quiet Mississauga neighbourhood got a shocking visit from officers at about 6:30 p.m. local time who stormed the new subdivision and busted down the door of a home.

One neighbour described the arrested man as heavy-set, in his mid-50s with black hair a beard who appeared to be Muslim.

News reports said among those arrested were Canadian youths in their teens and 20s upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide.

They had trained at a camp north of Toronto, said reports, and had plotted to attack CSIS’s downtown office near the CN Tower, among other targets.
Well, bleeding hearts in Canada can no longer lie and claim that this sort of thing is not happening in Canada. The country should beef up security (not just minor spending increases), and immigration from the Middle East and other Muslim countries should be subject to even tougher and more stringent requirements and background checks.

On the political side, I wonder if Canadians will look at which prime minister they would rather have in power in a situation like this, Stephen Harper or any of Paul Martin’s would-be successors. After all, Liberal candidates such as Bob Rae want to pull out of Afghanistan. I would hate to see a “soft bastard” such as Rae behind the helm.

Wow!..and in Canada!..Go figure.

And yet other Canadians will wonder if a government like Harper’s did not create such a thing.

Well, I am sure those type of Canadians will enjoy the many “cultural sensitivity” documentaries that CBC will air in the coming days.

It’s about bloody time. But why not Montreal, or Vancouver?

All I can say is, it’s a damn good thing we’ve got a Tory in power in Ottawa. If the Liberals had won the last federal election, the terrorists probably would have succeeded in blowing something up.

What difference does that make? Believe me, nobody’s gladder than me that the liberals are out, and Stephen Harper seems to be doing a pretty good job, but he’s barely been in power long enough to choose office curtains. What makes you think his administration has affected the professionalism of Canadian law enforcement (inthis instance, at least). The RCMP, CSIS and local law enforcement should all be commended for an excellent job! :bravo:

You’ve either been in Taiwan too long, or your ear for sarcasm is tone deaf.

Some more information from the news conference [ from Small Dead Animals blog]:

 • RCMP, along with CSIS and other security partners have arrested 12 adults and 5 young offenders who were planning a series of terrorist attacks on a variety of targets in southern Ontario.

 • They’ve been charged under contributing to activity of a terrorist group, commission of firearms and explosives offenses for the benefit of a terrorist group, providing or making available property for the purpose of terrorist activities.

 • 3 tons of ammonium nitrate was ordered and delivered. (the 1995 Oklahoma bombing was comleted with only 1 ton of ammonium nitrate)

 • they had the capacity and intent to carry out the attacks

 • All are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds, inspired by Al Qaeda
A list of the adults arrested and charged with terrorism-related offences under the Criminal Code. Five youths, who cannot be named, were also charged:

 1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, Toronto;
 2. Zakaria Amara, 20, Mississauga, Ont.;
 3. Asad Ansari, 21, Mississauga;
 4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, Mississauga;
 5. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, Mississauga;
 6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ont.;
 7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;
 8. Jahmaal James, 23, Toronto;
 9. Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, Toronto;
 10. Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, Toronto;
 11. Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, Mississauga;
 12. Saad Khalid, 19, of Eclipse Avenue, Mississauga.
Some of them are believed to have trained at a training camp just outside Toronto.

And it is NOT :fume: “about bloody time”. The Canadian government has been warning that there are a lot of Al-Quaeda sympathizers in Canada for quite some time. They’ve been tracking some of the people in this group for a few years, just as they are watching several hundreds more just like them. They’ve been telling us that it was “about bloody time” for several years now, and because of their recognition of that fact, a horrific tragedy was prevented from taking place.
Three tons of ammonium nitrate is no joke. Whatever they were planning to do with that would have been brutal and bloody. Kudos to the Canadian government for the brilliant job they did in thwarting the terrorists’ plans in time.

I hope the world never sees a terrorist attack in Canada. My heart goes out to all of the Canadians today who have to live in fear of the rest of the terrorists the Canadian gov’t is keeping an eye on as well.

Go go Canadian police! Keep up the good work! :notworthy:

I’ve seen from the local news that CSIS was on those guys’ since 2004.

I am glad that they were caught before they do any damage and that the government did not let their guard down.

Oh hell, the Canadian gov’t has been on top of these cretins for a long time. From the AP wire:

The Canadian anti-terrorism law was passed swiftly following the Sept. 11 assaults, particularly after Osama bin-Laden’s named Canada one of five so-called Christian nations that should be targeted for acts of terror. The others were the United States, Britain, Spain and Australian, all of which have been victims of terrorist attacks.

The anti-terrorism law permits the government to brand individuals and organizations as terrorists and gives police the power to make preventive arrests of people suspected of planning a terrorist attack.

Though many view Canada as an unassuming neutral nation that has skirted terrorist attacks, it has suffered its share of aggression, including the 1985 Air India bombing, in which 329 people were killed, most of them Canadian citizens.

Intelligence officials believe at least 50 terror groups now have some presence in the North American nation and have long complained that the country’s immigration laws and border security are too weak to weed out potential terrorists. The anti-terrorism law permits the government to brand individuals and organizations as terrorists and gives police the power to make preventive arrests of people suspected of planning a terrorist attack.

Okay, maybe now I see what you mean about “it’s about time.” Maybe Canadian citizens did need a bit of a wake-up call to understand that the threat of terrorism against Canada is indeed a real threat and not just government paronioa. Thank goodness (and the stellar work of the Canadian intelligence system) they were able to get this wake-up call without any loss of life or destruction of property.

What other powers did the Canadian anti-terrorism law give to the police? Whatever they’ve got, it sure is working. Once again, kudos to them for a job well-done.

Sorry, but I believe it is! Canada has long been lax on it’s immigrant communities, & their real connection ($) with terrorist movements world wide. Whether it’s Sikhs, Croats, Red Brigade, Cypriots, Sri Lankans, The ANC, Hamas, Hezbollah, The IRA, the list goes on and on.

Sooner or later, this haven for international terrorism was due to turn in on itself. Especially in light of our deployment to Afghanistan.

I’m not blaming the actions of our security forces at all. What they did was highly commendable! Hats off to JTF2, CSIS and the RCMP. I hope their zeal will lead to further action, against other factions residing in Canada that fund & sponsor terrorism.

I do not, however, think this has anything to do with the government of Canada. It remains to be seen if the recent change of leadership will have any positive effect at all. That said, the increase in the defence budget, and recent wordings on the International Scene from the Conservatives are steps in the right direction. :bravo:

Hopefully this issue will open the eyes of all Canadians, whatever their ethnic backgrounds.

Well, judging from the many responses from myopic liberal moonbats on rabble.ca, there are still plenty of blind Canadians.

What he said.

“We are targeted because of who we are and the way we live,” he said. “Because of our society, our diversity and our values.”
– Prime Minister Stephen Harper

“Before I begin, I say to you that security is an indispensable pillar of human life and that free men do not forfeit their security, contrary to Bush’s claim that we hate freedom. If so, then let him explain to us why we don’t strike for example - Sweden? And we know that freedom-haters don’t possess defiant spirits like those of the 19 - may Allah have mercy on them. No, we fight because we are free men who don’t sleep under oppression. We want to restore freedom to our nation, just as you lay waste to our nation. So shall we lay waste to yours. No one except a dumb thief plays with the security of others and then makes himself believe he will be secure. Whereas thinking people, when disaster strikes, make it their priority to look for its causes, in order to prevent it happening again. But I am amazed at you. Even though we are in the fourth year after the events of September 11th, Bush is still engaged in distortion, deception and hiding from you the real causes. And thus, the reasons are still there for a repeat of what occurred.”
– Osama bin Laden

“Free men, who don’t sleep under oppression.”
Right. Total bullshite. Sharia will free all!

That quote of his is so full of holes one would think it was done by a state dept hack!

Am not sure what your point is, except maybe to expose both men as liars & hypocrites.
Bin Laden is a propaganda icon whose words mean nothing, just as much as Bush or Blair’s words mean nothing. It’s actions that count, right?

And the arrests in T.O. are one mighty fine action. I hope we increase our deployment to Afghanistan soon. Let’s show them we’re in for the long haul…
:smiling_imp:

Well, it looks like the Canadians can nab terrorists effectively without compromising Canadian freedoms. I wish I could say the same for America.

All but one of the terrorists was born in Canada. I wonder how long these Canadian citizens were being watched. Half of their life? Do you have some secret inside information on the investigative methods that the rest of us don’t? Wait and see, my friend. We’re going to be reading about this for months. I wonder what will come out in the trial. Hopefully the suspected terrorists will so happy about the respectful and lawful treatment they received from the Canadian gov’t that they will happily cough up the names and plans of all of the other al-quaeda sympathizers in Canada along with chocolates and candy. I’m sure the trial will look like one big hippie love-in.

And as for the “it’s about time” comment, perhaps I misunderstood the OP. I just meant to say that the Canadian gov’t has been anticipating this for years - at least since OBL named Canada as a target, if not longer. I’m just thankful they were on the ball and able to stop the terrorists in time. If it wakes people up, I suppose that’s a good thing, but shame on anyone who didn’t wake up years ago. Thank goodness at least the government was awake and learning from the experiences of the other western countries that have been through this nightmare.

If Canada is able to neutralize all of the suspected al-Quada sympathizers, many of whom are Canadian-born, as the majority of these scumbags were, without compromising a single freedom and treating all of them with dignity and respect, hats off to them. I hope they will set a stellar example for the rest of the world as to how these things can be accomplished so that we may all learn from them.

Anyway, my heart goes out to Canada today. You have my sympathy for the long and scary road you’re about to navigate. Keep in mind that the London intelligence agencies were able to stop five plots by terrorists to bomb the transit system before the perpetrators on 7/7 were able to get past them. I hope this event in Canada was an isolated incident, but I doubt the Canadian government will treat it as such. Things like this have a way of changing people’s minds, and not always for the better. I truly hope Canadians are able to navigate it better than anyone else ever has, so that the rest of us can learn from you. Best of luck.
