In a sweeping raid, police arrested about a dozen men in the Toronto area on terrorism-related charges Friday night, the RCMP announced.
Intelligence sources allege the men were part of a terrorist cell, close to carrying out attacks on one or more Canadian targets.
Police seized chemicals used to make explosives and weapons.
“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage,” a source who asked not to be named told The Canadian Press.
The suspects are either second-generation Canadians or recently immigrated to Canada with their families.
Sources claimed the men have no connection to al Qaeda, but were allegedly inspired by militant Islamic groups.
Though unconfirmed, sources have told Sun Media police arrested an al-Qaida cell operating in Toronto that had planned to bomb the subway as early as Monday.
Just three days ago, Toronto Sun columnist Joe Warmington wrote about two men spotted filming the subway system May 23 at Keele station, which raised alarm bells with Toronto police and CSIS.
Another source also tells Sun Media the arrested individuals were amassing weapons.
“This is huge, this is massive.”
The enforcement team also includes GTA police forces and the department of justice.
Officials remained tight-lipped about the nature of the arrests, refusing to reveal the number of people arrested, who was arrested, the nature of the terrorist activities, when or where the arrests were made.
Reports peg the number of arrests at eight and also say about a hundred officers were involved in the bust.
Meanwhile, a quiet Mississauga neighbourhood got a shocking visit from officers at about 6:30 p.m. local time who stormed the new subdivision and busted down the door of a home.
One neighbour described the arrested man as heavy-set, in his mid-50s with black hair a beard who appeared to be Muslim.
News reports said among those arrested were Canadian youths in their teens and 20s upset at the treatment of Muslims worldwide.
They had trained at a camp north of Toronto, said reports, and had plotted to attack CSIS’s downtown office near the CN Tower, among other targets.
Well, bleeding hearts in Canada can no longer lie and claim that this sort of thing is not happening in Canada. The country should beef up security (not just minor spending increases), and immigration from the Middle East and other Muslim countries should be subject to even tougher and more stringent requirements and background checks.
On the political side, I wonder if Canadians will look at which prime minister they would rather have in power in a situation like this, Stephen Harper or any of Paul Martin’s would-be successors. After all, Liberal candidates such as Bob Rae want to pull out of Afghanistan. I would hate to see a “soft bastard” such as Rae behind the helm.
