I was searching for Somerset Maugham mentions in Forumosa and I stumbled upon this thread. The original video is not available but I wonder what started this whole discussion
The video itself is the reason for the thread. YouTube has loads more of these stories. Guys who cash in their retirement plans and sell their property and hand over the cash to a Thai girlfriend to buy a house. Then the girl divorces them and makes the guy move out.
I have friends who live in Thailand in the motorcycle racing trade.
Stories they can tell you of guys being screwed in every way possible.
Not only Brits, Germans, Dutch and Aussies seem big suckers also.
Theyāve been having some problems with there business from Russian gangsters lately.
They should pay off the local gangsters/police for some protection
Graham Greene as well as Maugham springs to mind:
āThereās nothing wrong in love. It happens. It doesnāt much matter who with. We get caught up, we get kidnapped by mistake.ā
The uncontrollable onset of emotions in a man whose life seems to have nearly run its course. To suddenly discover love when none seemed possible. Itās like a strongly addictive drug.
Iām touched. Coincides perfectly with the Somerset Maugham short story Iām reading at the moment, The Social Scene.
Iām also having flashbacks of loves, of Thailand, of love with a Thailand girl, of love of Thai food.
Speaking from experience? ![]()
Youāve got a grey highlighter pen?
Itās a Kobo.
Yea, itās a Kobo ereader, similar to Kindle.
Brit still mix up Thailand and Taiwan, and think itās like the this topic in Taiwan , quite bad at Asian info I guess.
Isnāt it a global issue though? Things on the other side of the globe are not so easy to rememberā¦. Talk to the local Taiwanese about European or South American geography, itās fun ![]()
Most people are surprised to learn that Dominica is not the capitol of the Dominican Republic.
To be fair, (not all but a significant margin of) Americans still refer to the UK as āEnglandā - itās a global shitfest.
Yeah not politically correct but itās just more easily recognised than āThe United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Irelandā - which would still be misleading if you were wishing to present yourself as Scottish, so pick your most appropriateš¤·š»
Humm, I wonder people in England nowdays prefer be call English or Brit (Limey)
(Limey)
I havenāt ever been called limey but I think if someone is an American tourist and they called someone a limey in the UK then they would probably be quietly hated at best. Bit like calling someone from Louisiana a seppo.
bad at Asian info I guess.
Ask the average Taiwanese about Ireland/England/UK. No clue.
Ask them about their Asian knowledge when it doesnt concern japan and Korea. No clue.
