The 18% preferential interest rate

There was some pushing and shoving in the legislature today. The female DPP legislator who ate the paper several months back was quite tough with a KMT woman who took her on. I like her.

I believe the DPP are filibustering the vote on for legislation to reinstate the 18% preferential interest rate for civil servants, teachers and I forget who else. I’m surprised there isn’t a thread on this already. Maybe someone can make a better first post than this one. I’m a bit weak on the deatails and too lazy to research it now.

I’m wondering if the DPP is prepared to block the bill this way every time necessary. That could get colorful. Then, I guess it would become an election issue.

Oh look at that. I was checking out the Taiwan News feature story on AnimalsTaiwan and discovered a photo of the fun.

The KMT instituted this preferential treatment to teachers, military and civil servants. They’re buying off the teachers’ sympathies to inculcate kiddies to their dogma. They obviously want the military on their side, those who care more about their own bottom line rather than the military’s budget. It had been 18% for too long and is now more equitable.

we posted about the background of the 18% in another thread. I’ll see if I can find it.
