LA is a bugger when you first hit the outside.
6 lanes of traffic whizzing around in circles on 2 levels.
Heathrow a few weeks ago. They directed me onto Terminal 4 from Terminal 1 for Hong Kong. It was not correct then the bloody return train at 15 minute intervals missed an interval so 30 minute wait.
Nearly missed the plane.
Singapore.
Hong Kong.
Singapore. Nearly got arrested for carrying a weapon in transit (where said weapon was a blow pipe from Malaysia). That was exciting.
Frankfurt is bad, too. Even you speak/read German. Worst thing is to arrive in the very early morning when most counters (and lounges) are closed and the monitors don’t show your connecting flights yet.
HK airport is impressive but hardly exciting… and Singapore has never done it for. I hate airports…
Than ask my wife
she thinks it very exciting … shop until you drop
Hongkong had the best breastfeeding rooms I’ve ever seen: quiet music, cozy couches, nice interior… In Frankfurt, they didn’t even have a chair in the nursing room.
Not that any of this was exciting…
LA is bad. Getting from the Intl. terminal to the Domestic terminal in Johannesburg can be a drag.
Las Vegas–Where else can you win a fortune while waiting for your flight? OK, so I won only US$7, but that’s enough for a candy bar and a magazine.
Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam has a casino, too (Terminal West).
Beirut International Airport (BIA) has been one of the most exciting ones for me.
A term for very steep take-offs and landings has even been coined because of its historical…uh…‘problems.’
“Doing a BEIRUT!” - used to indicate a manuever usually associated with dodging a shoulder fired SAM (surface to air missle).
But they have a cool website - Beirut International Airport (BIA)
La Aurora Intl in Guatemala City is also very interesting. Located in a huge bowl surrounded by mountains. It can be a ‘white knuckle’ experience.
Amsterdam, because it all looks the damn same and Heathrow because the terminals seem to be placed all over London in a random manner.
LAX is the most complicated one I’ve used. LAX is also the only one I’ve been made to buy an onwards ticket at. Why are there so many Terminals?
The old Kai Tak airport in HK was a hell of a ride. Looking out the windows of the plane and being able to see people cooking dinner in their apartments and then looking down and watching a couple of minutes of a soccer game so low that I could actually make out the ball was a buzz.
Schilpol in Amsterdam is pretty cool. SFO international is not bad. JFK is quite huge now and has this space-age shuttle to it.
Also I heard there is an airport in Japan that has a hot spring in it. Fukuoka?
I kind of liked the United Red Carpet Club in Narita, they have showers and free beer from these automatic beer machines. Also internet access. And comfort girls…
Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam has a casino, too (Terminal West).[/quote]
But the real question is-- Do they have a bong room?
I must admit that the most exciting airport I have been to was Dubrovnik (Croatia) in 1993. (I have not been there recently, but since they rebuilt the terminal after the way, I think that it’s more bland now).
The airport was mere kilometers from the civil war, and the approach was not too different from the one used in Beirut.
Even more exciting was the luggage carrousel. Or, the luggage carrousels were in the terminal burned by the serbs in 1992, so there was none. They had a trap door the opened, and then they started to throw your luggage in a bunch on a concrete floor. Tough shit if you carried fragile items. (I didn’t).
As the temporary airport terminal was a partly dug down bunker, not too much in the way of facilities, but heck, I brought a book. Also, the Croatian girls are quite good looking, so for entertainment, you could always oogle them. (You would want to be careful around the girls carrying kalashnikovs, though).
I also liked the airport taxis a lot. Nice old but very airy mercedeses (mostly), with ventilation provided by the means of bullet holes here and there.
That said, I like the new Hong Kong one better.
As a frequent flyer I’ve been to many intl. airports, but the best and most exciting domestic airport has to be Koh Samui in Thailand.
It’s a bit of white knuckle ride on the big 'ole double-prop plane coming in on the glide path (which is right over the main beach by the way, so lots of fun when laying on the beach!). But after that it really gets cool.
They drop you off right on the open tarmac and there’s no other planes there. Then you just walk over to the small terminal. It’s set right next to lush tropical forest and surrounded by palms and thick green grass. We’re talking thatched roof here. Very funky.
Then they just bring your luggage over from the plane and set it on a table. It was a beautiful day we arrived so things might not be so nice if it’s raining.
Wonder’s post reminds me of the airport in Tioman, Malaysia. It’s a small island on the East coast with a mountain at the end of the runway. Either you make it or you don’t …
