The New York State News and Politics Thread

SN: The governor has said that nursing homes were legally required to be able to handle this intake of residents. Is there any truth to that, what’s the nuance people are missing?
Slotnick: He basically said nursing homes were required to re-accept their patients into the nursing homes if they had the ability and the resources to care for them. It’s my sense that some nursing homes interpreted that they needed to accept the patients, but there are other nursing homes that did not accept them. There’s a lot of nuances to this that a medical leadership understands in a nursing home.
What the governor said they were only required to take them if they had the ability and resources to care safely for the residents. But in fact a lot nursing homes felt they were required to take it. All nursing homes are different. Some had systems that they could take them, but at that point in the pandemic, very few were prepared.
SN: The AP reported 9,000 people were discharged from hospitals into nursing homes and they were COVID positive. In your opinion, did that play a role in March, April and early May in what went wrong in nursing homes?
Slotnick: In my opinion, the question that’s really on the table is the fact that COVID positive patients returned to the nursing homes – that impact on the nursing home patients who developed COVID? The answer is yes. It varied with nursing homes. Yes, it did contribute to it and I think further investigation has to be done how much it contributed to it.

I’m not buying it either.

CNN has joined the fray. The story is just too big to fail.

Right now, the drumbeat of condemnation is loud, but it remains to be seen what concrete actions will result. If New Yorkers want transparency and accountability from this administration, our public integrity systems provide the tools to make that happen. If we want New York to be a governmental integrity leader instead of a corruption leader, we should use those tools.

The buck does indeed stop with the elected leaders who made the fateful decisions to send sick COVID patients into nursing homes, lock down their states, and mask up their citizens in perpetuity, but that’s only half of the story. The bad data they used almost exclusively came from the Gates network, which has trafficked in pseudoscience and has demonstrated complete incompetence and reckless forecasting since the beginning of last year.

WOw. Pleeeeease be a recording of this call!

“At first, there was a silence on the phone,” Kim said. “Then the governor says, ‘Mr. Kim, are you an honorable man?'”
Kim — who said he was “in the middle of bathing my kids” — said Cuomo asked him to draft a statement “to say that Melissa DeRosa said there was a federal investigation and they had to deal with that first.”
During the conversation, Kim said, Cuomo warned him, “You have not seen my wrath. I have been biting my tongue for months.”
“I can tell the whole world what a bad person you are and you will be finished,” Kim recalled Cuomo saying.
“You will be destroyed.”

And the clincher from Cuomo: You’re corrupt too! So don’t forget!

Cuomo’s office didn’t immediately return a request for comment, but during a news conference earlier Wednesday, the governor hurled unfounded allegations against Kim.
Among other things, Cuomo accused Kim of switching his position on a 2015 law regulating nail salons because “businesspeople in his community got upset.”
“He actually used his lobbying firm to lobby on behalf of the business owners … then raised money from those business owners and continues to do so,” Cuomo alleged.
“I believe it’s unethical, if not illegal. And I believe it’s a continuing racket because he’s still doing it.”

IF this were true, why the fuck hasn’t Cuomo had him investigated?

The dogpile has arrived:

I was escorted into the Governor’s office, past the desks of administrative assistants and into a room with a large table and historical artifacts. The door closed behind me. It was my first time in his Albany office. The Governor entered the room from another door. We were alone.
As he showed me around, I tried to maintain my distance. He paused at one point and smirked as he showed off a cigar box. He told me that President Clinton had given it to him while he served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The two-decade old reference to President Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky was not lost on me.

Oh Randy Andy!

Everything is awash in urine and lust…and cigars

Handsy Andy. And don’t fret HE hisself will run a independent investigation and get to the fleshy pink bottom of it. Outside investigation, my arse.

The Times also quoted Ms. Bennett as saying, “I understood that the governor wanted to sleep with me, and felt horribly uncomfortable and scared.”
Bennett told the Times she told her parents about what had happened and that she also spoke with senior members of the governor’s staff, and was eventually transferred to work at another state agency.
Governor Cuomo reacted swiftly to the Times report, issuing a statement that read:
“Ms. Bennett was a hardworking and valued member of our team during COVID. She has every right to speak out.”
“When she came to me and opened up about being a sexual assault survivor and how it shaped her and her ongoing efforts to create an organization that empowered her voice to help other survivors, I tried to be supportive and helpful. Ms. Bennett’s initial impression was right: I was trying to be a mentor to her. I never made advances toward Ms. Bennett nor did I ever intend to act in any way that was inappropriate. The last thing I would ever have wanted was to make her feel any of the things that are being reported.”
This situation cannot and should not be resolved in the press; I believe the best way to get to the truth is through a full and thorough outside review and I am directing all state employees to comply with that effort. I ask all New Yorkers to await the findings of the review so that they know the facts before making any judgements. I will have no further comment until the review has concluded.”

I thought politicians were supposed to speak softly and carry a big stick.

That’s his brother’s job…apparently.

Trying to beat out that oncoming train.

Good luck, Andy!

AOC is on the case:

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called for an independent investigation into the sexual harassment claims made against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“Lindsey Boylan and Charlotte Bennett’s detailed accounts of sexual harassment by Gov. Cuomo are extremely serious and painful to read,” she wrote. “There must be an independent investigation – not one led by an individual selected by the Governor, but by the office of the Attorney General.”

Credit to her for being consistent on these issues in.a non partisan way. She is growing on me, I could not stand her a couple of years back.
I am curious to see how CNN handles this one.

Not really, he’s not loved by progressive Democrats. I’m not saying she wouldn’t be consistent otherwise, I bet she would.

Oh I thought he was like the future leader, the new shining star …

Well, the party has a moderate wing and a progressive wing. Progressives would like to see one of their own next time around, I’m sure.

I do admittedly watch his brither’s TV show on CNN, he looks like he is always just about to lose it then pulls back.

So she’s all for it when it’s sexual harassment? Where was she when he sent covids to nursing homes?

You know, that’s occurred to me about other people in the state government, there must be a lot. Blaming her is a stretch though.

Blaming her? For what? Cuomo’s incompetence and corruption? No.

She’s just riding the contrived wave of displeasure which is moving the goalposts. While the sexual harassment accusations are important and should be investigated…they seem to be taking priority over what, 15 thousand deaths which can be squarely placed at the feet of the all powerful, literally, the unilateral executive power of Cuomo.

What if the moderate wing of the Democrats is the corporate wing and what if the moderate wing of the Republicans is the corporate wing of the Republicans and these two wings form two wings of the same bird where neither care for Democrat or Republican values?

Sign me up.

Indeed, there are many that do. But have you asked why they need to operate by subterfuge?
