OK, I know where the beach is. Theoretically speaking. I’ve even been there, on a motorbike.
But I meet these people occasionally who seem to spend inordinate amounts of time there, doing cool stuff. With their dogs.
How does one go about finding a regular beach hang-out, a place to sleep one or two nights a week, two or three times a month? And how do you get there?
Yeah, I know, it’s kind of a travel question. But it’s more about being there, repeatedly, than travelling.
I’m looking at Thu, Fri, maybe Weds too. With the dog. Not on a motorbike. Within taxi distance then, ouch!
The one you’re thinking about goes out through the Yilan tunnel. Too far for me altogether, except on the odd occasion. I really HATE driving through that tunnel.
How big is the dog? Can carry inside a bag on bus or train? If so, then catch train to Toucheng just north of Illan, or to Fulong. In Toucheng, can take taxi, but can walk direct to beach from the Wai’ao stop. In Fulong, can walk straight out the train station to the beach.
If taxi is only option, then from Taipei, Toucheng is closest at about 40 minutes depending on traffic, but could be up to a couple hours if heavy weekend traffic. From Tienmu area, then head to beaches past Danshui, where no train goes. Or across YMS to Jinshan.

The beach was really trashy the first time I was there (the day before the typhoon) but a few days after the typhoon, it was reasonable enough. I’m sure it’s cold and rainy in the winter, but it’s fine now.

This was Tuesday (Click on the pic for the video):
For me, the beach isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. It’s preventative and therapeutic medicine. And it gives me a great chance to focus on my daughter (and my dog!) in a way that I don’t always do when I’m at home. It takes me 45 minutes from door to beach. I use the 90 minutes to listen to podcasts, and I am very careful to always avoid rush hour - the tunnel to Toucheng / Yilan is fine if traffic is zipping along, but it can be VERY tedious when it’s backed up.
Yeah: It may be a luxury in a city like Taipei, but it’s great for getting out of town on the weekends. I’m also a fan of the Yilan tunnel toward Suao and Waiao. 40 minutes door to beach.
