I don’t really understand this catagory… best thinking songs???
But, I’ll give it a shot:
Grateful Dead - Dark Star (Well, the lyrics always make me think a bit…)… Check out at the 5:35 mark, a little kid walks out on the stage… so very Grateful Dead… Oh, and the lyrics are below, but, for whatever reason, they didn’t sing in this version…
Dark star crashes
pouring its light
into ashes
Reason tatters
the forces tear loose
from the axis
Searchlight casting
for faults in the
clouds of delusion
shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds
Mirror shatters
in formless reflections
of matter
Glass hand dissolving
to ice petal flowers
revolving
Lady in velvet
recedes
in the nights of goodbye
Shall we go,
you and I
While we can?
Through
the transitive nightfall
of diamonds
spinning a set the stars through which the tattered tales of axis roll about the waxen wind of never set to motion in the unbecoming round about the reason hardly matters nor the wise through which the stars were set in spin
This one sets most players back to zero without passing go. So maybe it might be worth a gander when thinking, really thinking.
And then try singing it in front of a mirror.
You are so beautiful to me.
You are so beautiful to me.
Can’t you see?
You are everything I hoped for,
You are everything I need,
You are so beautiful to me.
Such joy and happiness you bring.
Such joy and happiness you bring.
Like a dream,
A guiding light that shines in the night,
Heavens gift to me,
You are so beautiful to me.
Interesting non-traditional arrangement:

I’ve never been a big fan of their music but many of their lyrics like this one really resonate. They need to be published as poetry. No doubt they will some day when they are talking about Rimbaud’s influence on Garcia. Thanks Tigerman.
And you get a classic for this “Oh, and the lyrics are below, but, for whatever reason, they didn’t sing in this version…” :roflmao: :bravo: double
Almost anything by Al Stewart would be a ‘thinking song’, but my favorite is Nostradamus:
Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics for most of Garcia’s tunes. John Barlow wrote lyrics with Bob Weir. You might be surprised to know that the Grateful Dead lyrics are already the subject of much study… and now, many people are studying the genius of the Grateful Dead’s marketing methods.

I forget about him sometimes. I tried to find Post World War Two Blues, but no.
Leonard Cohen
Roxy Music’s “Mother of Pearl”
If you don’t know the song, the lyrics become particularly acute at about the 2 minute mark and don’t let up.
It’s an old tune, but it still gets me thinking, even today …
“… some anti-sleekness
was always my weakness,
like a simple tune …”
