The Bitch down the lane

What to do? I have this bitch stray (I’ve asked all the neighbours and no one owns her) who chases me with intent to harm me everytime I ride up the hill. I can outrun her, but when my lady is on board, I really hate having to speed up the twisty little lane that services my mountain. The protecter in me wants to take a club to her, but I know that’s not right. Now she has her quickly sprouting offspring doing the same. I swear to buddha, I am gonna kill them if they ever cause a mishap where my g/f is involved.

Any ideas?

The dog probably has some kind of niche in that area if she’s always there. It’s basic survival instinct, she is protecting her territory or what she assumes is her territory anyways.

I find the best way to react to this is to stop abruptly. When you keep going or even speed up, the bitch is in predator mode, and you become the prey. But when you stop, it throws off her instinct to chase. She’s no longer the predator. 99.9% of the time (In my experience, it’s 100% of the time), the chaser will also stop running abruptly and will keep a safe distance. Avoid eye contact and slowly go on your way. If she starts chasing you again, then stop again. After two or three times doing that on a different day, she will not chase you anymore.

It requires not being afraid that the dog will take the opportunity to actually attack if you stop. Perhaps that’s something that either you or your girlfriend are not confident enough to do. But it really works. It’s important to remain calm and to not appear agitated.

There’s this dog near my place that chases people like that. ALL THE TIME. He used to chase me, too, but it did not last. Personally, I find it funny to stop when a dog chases me because you can literally see the dog’s confusion as if as if he was saying “Uh? But you’re supposed to run away and I’m supposed to chase you?”

The bigger danger with chasing dogs is that they often appear out of nowhere at full speed between two cars and make you jolt. I’ve seen people jolting enough that they nearly fell of their scooters in situations like that. There’s no doubt that dogs who do that are a hazard and a nuisance, especially to people who fear dogs.

Anyways, the above can stop the dog from chasing you, but it will not help other passersby. There is a lengthy controversial discussion that Maoman started a while back when he was having a similar problem in a park near his place. You can find it if you do a search using the term “CNR.”

She will actually charge me as I come towards here, then chase as I blast past. She has her fangs bared and intends to do us harm. Of this I have no doubt. I have established dominance over her when walking by her, but there is no way in hell I am going to stop when on my bike. I can’t shed the bike from under me in time to avoid harm. And yes, she has sprung out of nowhere to attack as well. Also, she is not always there. She’ll disappear for weeks on end only to return more aggressive than before. Are there any dog cops I could call?

I believe you can call the dog catchers, put in a complaint, and they will try to catch her. Hopefully her spot will be taken by a more passive dog in the future. They catch dogs randomly, but they tend to work in areas where complaints have been received.

Sadly, there are no infrastructures meant to rehabilitate the dogs that are truly aggressive in Taiwan. Dangerous dogs as described in your posts, although very rare, represent a hazard to public safety. :frowning:

The smart thing to do is stop running, driving and than yell at her … she will scare away and never ever attack you again … my own experience in many cases …

It’s the hunting instinct and she thinks you’re a wonderful piece of wild meat …

Well, it’s working. Thanks bobepine. Credit where credit is due and all that. When I see her, I stop and she cowers away. Then I drive by slowly. Thanks a lot. I would have really dreaded if this escalated to me taking far more drastic measures.

There are a few farmhouses in the mountains of Jiayi County that are guarded very well by Tibetan Mastiffs. If you ever come across one of those dogs, for the love of God, don’t stop! Get the hell out of there as fast as you can! :astonished:

Apparently there are very few true Tibetan mastifs still around. Most of them have interbred with local dogs.

Nice looking dogs.

Incidentally i have never been attacked by a dog in my life until yesterday. A very large dog just ran up behind me growling in attack mode. I just turned and faced it and was about to attack it, but it suddenly ran off.

I then went after the owner and said she should control it better, or put it on a lead or muzzle it. I expalined that if I was an older person or toddler it may of bitten.
(all the time the dog is still growling and backing away).
She just said “well it’s never happened before” and “he’s such a nice dog”. Alluding to it being my fault ( although i was innocently walking down the street).

Geez :unamused:

Glad it worked for you, Toe.
