The Daily Wire

It seems that The Daily Wire is engaged in an effort to create a space for people who aren’t entrenched in leftist ideology to have a voice. I’ve seen bits and pieces of this over the last year, but I saw today that NBA player Jonathan Isaac is partnering with them on a book due out in May.

After Run Hide Fight was seen as having a problematic position on gun control and school shootings, The Daily Wire distributed the film.

They got more actively involved in movie making, producing a thriller which I won’t be watching:

After Gina Carano was fired from the Mandolorian for asking people not to demonize others, The Daily Wire started making a movie with her…apparently another thriller named Terror on the Prairie.

As Forumosans saw and endlessly debated, The Daily Wire’s investigative reporters broke the VA school bathroom rape story which may have swung the governor’s election.

It seems they are making a full-on expansion from being a conservative opinion site to being a developer of cultural works.

Regardless of what you may think of their political leanings, I’m happy to see an alternative space being developed where the canceled and non-leftists can have a voice.

This is a smart move. You have no chance of winning the culture war without getting involved in the culture industry. Now they just need to learn how to churn out good product.

100 posts were split to a new topic: What books are appropriate for children?

Locked for moderation

Most of this thread has been talking about what kind of books are suitable for kids, I cut from pretty much the beginning of the going off topic and moved here,

If anyone would like a post moved back to this thread and is on topic with the Daily Wire, please send me a PM.

Run Hide Fight was a good movie, though they didn’t make it. I’m not interested in horror movies, so I doubt I’ll watch any of the other stuff they make. But you’re right…if the content sucks it doesn’t really matter.

“There’s a demand amongst certain subsets of the public for outrage politics,” said Jaime Settle, director of the Social Networks and Political Psychology Lab at the College of William & Mary in Virginia. “This happens on both the left and the right. But the people who do this on the right have just found a lot more successful ways of doing it.”

The site produces little original reporting but instead mostly repackages journalism from traditional news organizations with a conservative slant.

Legum and co-writer Tesnim Zekeria analyzed 70 of The Daily Wire’s top stories on Facebook in May and June and found that almost all of them were regurgitations of another outlet’s reporting.

But as Settle explains, by only covering specific stories that bolster the conservative agenda (such as negative reports about socialist countries and polarizing ones about race and sexuality issues) and only including certain facts, readers still come away from The Daily Wire’s content with the impression that Republican politicians can do little wrong and cancel culture is among the nation’s greatest threats.

Just wanted to add to this…

Facebook has been attempting to de-emphasize their political posts so the Daily Wire probably saw the writing on the wall and the need to diversify their business model.

While most news publishers rely on Facebook traffic as a key part of their business model, conservative news outlets generally benefit most as “right-wing populism” is more engaging, according to a Facebook executive quoted by Politico.

“But one of the top pieces of feedback we’re hearing from our community right now is that people don’t want politics and fighting to take over their experience on our services,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at January’s earnings call.

“We’ll have to balance this carefully because we have a deep commitment to free expression. So I believe that if people want to be able to discuss this stuff or join groups there, they should certainly be able to do that,” he added.

My daughter loves Harry Potter. I enjoy reading it with her and I recommend it.

Not this article again? Perhaps the most clueless and laughable hit piece produced last year.

Hit piece is a loaded term. The part I find laughable is the majority of their content is just regurgitated and not actually their own. I think it’s fair to call that out.

So? It’s accurate.

They did a lot more than that! Everyone understands their model. They can’t comment on news happening around the country?

They’re talking about things we don’t like! On Facebook! FACEBOOK!

Their criticism is accurate.

They can do whatever they want. I think it’s fair for people to understand their business model. Pointing out a criticism is not the same as trying to cancel. I see this reaction over and over whenever the criticism is directed at a conservative news source, politician, influencer etc. If you want to both sides to have a voice, then being open to criticism is part of that.

Are you yelling?

Or they are pretending to be news and not telling the full story.

It’s a laughable and ridiculously one-sided moan about controlling press freedom.

Excellent!

They could have done that with a sentence or two. Daily Wire comments on articles, news events, etc.

Their criticism singles out this media source for being one sided at length, which they are hardly the only media source that could be criticized for it. In other words, it’s an unbalanced and laughable hit piece.

YES! FACEBOOK!

The article is focusing on Daily Wire since the story is about more than just a conservative news source. It is Ben Shapiro’s attempt to create a media empire which thrives on outrage politics, playing up culture war issues at the expense of other stories.

You may not like it, but that is relevant to the OP’s initial post and fair to point out the criticism. You also may not agree and perhaps think they are just giving a platform to conservative issues in the name of free speech. Others may see them as deliberately exaggerating and focusing on culture war issues for the purpose of profit. Nothing wrong with showing the other side.
