The Democrats have the option to improve their nominee via a write-in campaign.
The voters have spoken, too late if you have any respect for democracy which I figure is a given, but I guess you never know.
Beyond that, if the focus is on beating Collins which I assumed when originally responding, it’s too late.
Maine voters evaluated the issues and chose Platner in a landslide. That’s it, now they can make their choice in November. There’s zero valid reason for Dems to do any stupid machinations.
Good day for progressives in NYC, with 3 Mamdani-endorsed progressives winning their races to run for Congress in November. Valdez, and Lander over incumbent Dan Goldman, were expected but the big one is Chevalier, who brushed off heavy AIPAC support for 5-time incumbent Espaillat and a campaign that veered into desperate and pretty disgusting identity politics toward the end.
You mean that Maine’s Democrat voters evaluated the issues and chose Platner (etc.). Maine voters won’t speak until November. And you may disagree, but there are more than a handful of reasons not elect Platner, and none of them are non-democratic.
I think you may be confusing Maine’s Democrat party with the whole of the state. Not unusual for Democrats to do that, but I guess you never know.
No of course I’m not. You seem to have come around to the correct way of looking at it however. There was an election, and the voters chose Platner. He is now the Dem candidate. As I also said, voters can now make their choice in the November general. All good!

Yeah, it’s somewhat complex involving NYC ethnic politics. The district is Harlem, the rest of northern Manhattan, and the South Bronx. Espaillat is Dominican, who have come to be a large part of the local population there. He’s a long-time resident. Chevalier is Dominican and Haitian and moved in more recently. There’s sentiment against “gentrification” in the area and she was attacked on that basis, and also for her Haitian identity. Espaillat did best in his Bronx stronghold.
Well, kudos for the socialists for resisting the old cornered-Democrat stand-by, identity politics.
If that marks a trend (failed identity attacks by Democrats) then imho the Democrats’ future has brightened in 2026 and beyond.

The more socialist types can (and should IMO) be focused on economics. Old habits die hard though! I originally took notice of Mamdani because his platform was entirely economics-based. However, he needs DSA and adjacent support to govern, and that means some level of accommodation to social justice priorities. Chris Rabb is a a Philly socialist who just won his primary against a more mainstream Dem in the nation’s bluest district. I was impressed by what I heard from him before the race, but less impressed by his race-based critique of Platner (as it happens) recently after his win. Identity-related issues remain in American society, and the politics aren’t going away. That being said there are indications that young and other people are seeing the self-defeating nature of hyper-emphasized, corporatized, brunch liberal identity politics and we’re seeing them on the wane.
The solution to NYC’s housing problem is to recognize that natural resources exist to support life, not to make the few wealthy. In practice this would mean the end of landlordism and property speculation. NYC would become a city of property owners. All rental payments would be converted to mortgage payments paying off all current owners at market rate. All new construction could only be sold to owner occupants, not property investors.
One of the problems I have with the DSA (one of many) is that, on the estimable theory “believe what they say,” I don’t trust them. At all. And based on what they say and write, I’m not being wild-eyed or hyperbolic about it.
I don’t even believe the Democratic descriptor in DSA, or that they’d give up power if they lost an election.

I harbor zero doubts that if the DSA had its way the borders would be opened, police would be abolished, private property would be seized, industry would be nationalized … and who knows what else.
