So, as I previously said, my laptop is/was on it’s way out.
Today it will only run in ‘Safe’ mode.
I’m off to HK tomorrow to get a new one, but a little worried - I need to get all the important files off this one before it super-konks.

Try to save not only the files but your favorites and such. There is a Windows function for that. Best of luck, good computer hunting.

Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Backup
Then your favorites are stored as a .json file.
Backup on an external hdd and you’ll be fine. You can either do a total back up through windows, or simply locate the stuff you want to save and copy/paste on the hdd. What i prefer to do in this kind of situation is:
a) Locate stuff i want to keep (pictures, mp3, movies, important files etc)
b) Download the installers for all the programs i use more often
c) Copy a) and b) on a hdd
d) Get a new laptop and go to that company’s website to download the latest drivers
e) Copy the drivers on the hdd
f) Make a fresh installation of windows 7, reinstall drivers, plug in the hdd, reinstal your programs, you’re good to go.
If you travel a lot take Dell under consideration, they have a great international warranty. When I had a problem with my Acer bought in europe it was a disaster to get any help from Acer in Australia and I ended up replacing the Lcd by myself. With Dell you just call them and you have a tech at home in few hours/next day.
