The "eight virtues"?

After being told about this and then promptly forgetting half of it months ago, I’ve just remembered being told about the connection between the names of Bade, Zhongxiao, Renai, Xinyi, and Heping Roads. I remember being told that the last four were the “eight virtues” (ba de) as explained by someone, but I can’t remember who or when. Anyone know this?

That’s what I have been told, too. And I can’t remember by whom either. (‘When’ was about a few years ago …)

I don’t know who or when (if you mean as mentioned by someone on this forum). But I can help you if you want to know the 八德 and 四維.

Well, I kind of assumed the 八德 were 忠,孝,仁,愛,信,義,和,平 respectively (although splitting 和平 like that seems wrong to me…)

Oh, and I didn’t mean who and when as in on the forum, I meant the person who first actually talked about the 八德

It’s from Confucius … see here otboy.org/rockystudy/english … istics.htm

The only reason I know is because my Chinese name is 德維. Incidentally, there are also supposed to be 8 (different) virtues for women which are about as enlightened as you’d expect from a several thousand year old ideology (‘Knowing your place’, ‘Doing the dishes’ sort of thing)
