The Funkiest Songs Ever!

They use that LTD song in the Boss Baby movie so it’s one of the “old songs” my kids will let me listen to in the car - along with Gotta Get You Into My Life by The Beatles and Happy Together by The Turtles (both were in the Minions movie).

My favorite LTD song is Love Ballad but they chuck a fit if I put it on.

Ohio Players are pretty well known but I feel like it’s mostly for Fire and Lover Rollercoaster. I may be wrong, it’s just the impression I have. But there’s a deep well to draw on there.

Well, for good reason. Those are awesome songs. But yeah, they put out a lot of stuff, and then there’s those steamy album covers.

I decided to start adding the artists and songs to the post because I realized I couldn’t do a quick search to see if something had been posted before or not.

Searched this thread and can’t believe this isn’t in it. Lionel Richie really went downhill not too long after this.

That’s funny, you’d think it would have come up before now.

Oh, check out that harp on the first one. Wasn’t expecting that. The second one’s just pure gospel music. Very strong backup singers on both tunes.

I’m an atheist, but I’d sit through a sermon or two for some of that gospel.

Churches where they sing like that have more singing than sermon anyway! The congregation demands it (for obvious reasons).

The Reverend Al Green is where it’s at.

This one really does it for me. Curtis Mayfield.

Found it through listening to People Get Ready by Eva Cassidy (Curtis Mayfield has his version). But the version to listen to is by Al Green. Get ready for goosebumps when he starts.

OK, I’m thinking of joining this church now. But will they take a wretched sinner like me?

I go from time to time and don’t burst into flames as I walk through the doors. The bands here are pretty bland but competent.

This song always makes me laugh. Skip to 9:13. He’s not saying what I think he’s saying, is he?

Thread note: this isn’t in the running for the funkiest song ever.

Ha. He’s saying “yearning for you (the Lord)” but it sure sounds like…uh, yeah.

Crap… you’re right… now I can’t un-hear it. I preferred it the other way.

Here’s more Al Green as a palate cleanser.

Oh, man. Yes, yearn, thirst, etc. for the Holy Spirit is how I see that line.

I was just thinking, Rick James has been seriously underrepresented in this thread.

…and now for some popular hip hop samples…

Betty Wright - Clean Up Woman

Patrice Rushen - Forget Me Nots

Joe Cocker - Woman to Woman

I don’t think of Joe Cocker as a funk artist but he nailed the genre with that one.

Oops. How do i embed here?
