The greatest album of all time

There are lots of great albums: but only one greatest. Just one superlative. So what is your pick for the greatest album of all time?

I am going to go with this:

Probably a controversial choice, even for best Stones album.

Hmm, I could easily choose another Stones album. Still thinking

Best Of…

Norah Jones - Feels like Home.

Creepin’ In being a bit of a black sheep, only because Dolly Parton’s penetrating voice doesn’t really fit with the rest of the album, but is still pretty decent.

<previously linked video was sickeningly trash, just look it up on spotify>

Either that or The Cure - Disintegration.

Freaks, Faggots, Drunks, & Junkies was the soundtrack to a special time in my life. I even dedicated “Be My Fucking Whore,” to my wife at my wedding. But it’s really this 27 second mini-symphony that holds a special place in my heart. Not to mention the other obvious place.

Memento mori.

Got that on wax. Noice.

Abbey Road for studio album
The Band of Gypsys for live album
And for jazz there are so many.

Yeah it’s hard to pick one. I’ll say one just for the hell of it

The birth of the concept album with Serge Gainsbourg with bodacious riffs.
Serge Gainsbourg - La Melody Nelson - 1 Melody (youtube.com)

For their efforts on free speech
Dirty Nursery Rhymes (youtube.com)

Do people even listen to full albums anymore? Anyway, you youngsters don’t know what you missed out on. You buy an album for one or two songs, and end up being blown away by and falling in love with several other songs. Led Zeppelin II was like that for me (even though the album was a present).

Van Morrison Astral Weeks. Good for kicking back in the sun and also for cruising (outside of Taipei, that is).

I do.

Ok so far we have three people who have posted one - I repeat one - nomination for the greatest album - I repeat album - of all time.

No self awarding of points so that leaves two participants with a point.

@Mr_PBH for the Memento mori and @tempogain for Morrison Hotel. Everyone else is disqualified for posting multiple albums, photographs - you can’t listen to those - or 27 second pocket symphonies.

I listened to the dead album this afternoon. Disclaimer: I listened on earphones - the earphones are partly broken, and I’m half deaf in one ear too. I initially though it was a band called dark star. Ten minutes in I thought they were good - but too derivative of the Grateful Dead. Ten minutes later I am like wow, the dead really ripped these guys off they rock! Great bass and guitar meanderings - by the way it took me 20 minutes to figure out it was live - It’s not going to replace my personal choice however as it’s lacking in lyrics.

I listened to Morrison hotel too. A rocking album I probably would have agreed with you for a short period in the early 1990s when I became temporarily Doors obsessed. However I made the mistake of listening to the album that they made after Jim Morrison died. It was so bad and its impossible to un hear it. Morrison has phenomenal belief I would say to a level that would theoretically be consistent with a greatest album of all time. The lyrics however are shite:

“My girl awaits for me in tender time
My girl is mine
She is the world
She is my girl”

So lyrically like watching Joaqin Phoenix - man his name is hard to spell - in a bad movie.

I listened to @Dr_Milkers stones album too but I had the Umpah Loompahs wash and disinfect the relevant parts of my brain after he broke the rules by taking a second everlasting gobstopper.

Did you listen to the rest of the album?

What did you think of the Death Don’t Have No Mercy?

And you know that this album is Live Dead, right? :joy:

Memento mori is a Japanese pop goth band I love but I was referring to the meaning of MM in relation to the Dead album. :cd:

I listened to it all - I thought it was good but didn’t pay particular attention to which song was which as I was out walking. Definitely going to listen again though

I figured it out half way, honestly I thought it was a Dead side project or something at the start, lol

Hey, to be fair I said the other album was a contender. I still stand with my original Stones choice.
