🥇 Olympics - The Tokyo Olympics 2021

Will it go on?
How will it go on given COVID-19?
And now this:

International Olympic Committee (IOC) Rule 50.2, forbids demonstrations or political, religious or racial propaganda in games venues.

What protests will IOC allow?
Who will be the judge of such protests?
Will IOC give out gold/silver/bronze medals at the closing ceremony to best protests?

maybe no olympics in 2021 either

Can’t they just go and play?
I don’t watch olympics to know what each athlete is thinking or to see they protesting. :wall:

At least ROC TAIWAN athletes protest just by being there…

Many NBA players could not participate in the next olympic games

A January start of the next NBA season could mean a June or July regular-season finish, with playoffs concluding in August or September.

That could greatly affect Olympic plans.

The rescheduled Tokyo Olympics are set to begin July 23 and run through Aug. 8 — if those games are held. Final qualifying rounds for the 24 teams still bidding for the four remaining spots in the 12-team men’s basketball field would begin in June

Since we might have a vaccine -any vaccine- by July 202, what are our chances to go ahead with the games?

Here’s one recent report:

Yoshiro Mori, 83, set off a storm on social media both at home and abroad this week by saying that women talked too much, in remarks made in a meeting with the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC). He later retracted the comments and apologised but refused to resign.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday Mori’s apology had settled the issue, but criticism of the octogenarian former prime minister only grew on Friday.

An old Japanese male politician making sexist remarks?

Shocking!

Update

Today, the Five Parties (the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG), the Organising Committee Tokyo 2020 and the Government of Japan) met virtually. During the meeting, the IOC and IPC were informed, as outlined below, about the conclusion of the Japanese parties not to allow entry into Japan for overseas spectators for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 due to the prevailing worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. Olympic and Paralympic tickets purchased by overseas residents from the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee will be refunded.

So with the (rescheduled) Olympics coming up, how are things going in Japan?

The answer: not well.

Guy

It’s the UK variant, over 80% of cases there. It seems to be getting a lot more young people.

Makes me think we are not done in Taiwan yet.

Japan’s got its head in the sand.
No worries, once the Olympics are delayed (again) or (gasp) cancelled, some government official will cry at a press conference and bow 90 degrees.

???

I think you may be confusing pronouncements in Japan with celebrities holding press conferences in Taiwan.

This ongoing “The Olympics will be held” is becoming a bit of a joke. Its no spectacle without spectators, and no doubt many athletes will decide its too risky for them and wont go.

No doubt the IOC and Japan are pushing to continue due to the contracts for TV etc that have been signed and the worry that the Companies who signed will sue for Billions.

I feel for the Japanese people, but those making the decisions need to end the farce now and pull the pin.

Actually that is what the Japanese people want! It’s the governing party that is invested in this circus.

I sort of think it should go on without spectators. Just so the regular athletes can see what the paralympics are like when the organizers pilfer the money to line their own pockets.

As for the health issues it’s a disaster in the making. Especially now that the pharma companies are admitting to leakage from the vaccines. It’s the perfect environment to create a supervirus and then spread it back to all the countries that participated (or to all the countries that the athletes then move on to as there are various other international sports meets planned for after the olympics).

Judging by this they are refusing to even think about canceling it. 50 pre training camps that were supposed to happen in Japan have been canceled by the teams that were meant to attend.

To me seems just this business needs cash and big IOC staff to keep their jobs. Most Japanese could care less about it. (Average Japanese person cares more about their daily life like most people) The next winter one in Beijing will also be interesting next year. The winter games are getting harder to find host cities now with how much the cities need to spend.
