The Libya Thread -- The difference it makes

Because we’ll probably want one.
Islamist militias in Libya took control of nearly a dozen commercial jetliners last month, and western intelligence agencies recently issued a warning that the jets could be used in terrorist attacks across North Africa.

Intelligence reports of the stolen jetliners were distributed within the U.S. government over the past two weeks and included a warning that one or more of the aircraft could be used in an attack later this month on the date marking the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against New York and Washington, said U.S. officials familiar with the reports.
Let’s use this thread to talk about events both past and future in Libya, why they do or don’t matter, and just how the Golfer in Chief is not to blame. Everybody stay away from office towers in major cities if you can.

At least Qadaffi’s gone. That’s something. Getting rid of him surely bought the civilized world some time. Has that time been used wisely?

Eventually, should a certain aging hippie chick run for president, we can discuss how the Secretary of State is not to blame, and what difference – at this point – does it make.

Fly the friendly skies…

I know it’s a waste of time asking you, but what do you think should have been done?
At least McCain and other critics say what they think at the time- one time Ghaddafi is Hitler, then he’s an “interesting guy” when Mcain’s meeting with him to try and sell him military equipment. then he’s back to Hitler again.

In January Jonny’s pushing to help ISIS; in August he wants to help Assad.

So, what do you think should have been done, in either Iraq, Syria, or Libya?

I mean, besides electing McCain, Romney or some other steely-eyed real American guy whose sheer resolute determination- or is it sheer determined resolution?- would have cowed the dusky savages.

The solution is the same as always. Send other people’s children to kill Hajis until you either run out of other people’s children or Hajis.

Oh, almost anything other than this “leading from behind” nonsense would have turned out better.

This whole business of picking a faction to support is utterly retarded. Let the factions come to terms with us. Go in there and secure the place. Or at least secure strategic installations. Or at least the American embassy.

Whatever happened to the grownup in the room?

Team America is a shambles. How did that happen? Incompetent leadership, that’s how. The world is on its own.

Neocons perfected the art of leading from behind. It goes without saying that the real solution is for neocons and their military age family members to suit up finally and lead from the front for a change rather than carping endlessly about how others aren’t fighting their pet wars for them. That will never happen of course because neocons know better than anyone their recreational wars aren’t worth dying for.

Many of the neocons I’ve known were in `Nam.

Occupy Libya? What strategic installations? Why get troops killed occupying an embassy when there’s no government for the ambassador to deal with?

Hooyah!

This story is starting to get a little traction, now that He Who Shall Not Be Blamed has lost his Hypnot0ad mojo…
“Bob” told them to “hold up” because “we’re going to let the local militia handle it.” It was an incredible order, one telling Americans not to rescue Americans.

It’s not the first time Bob has ordered Americans not to rescue Americans.
1405: Three unmarked Dassault Mystère IIIC jets attack with napalm and rockets. Ship tries to contact Sixth Fleet headquarters, but five of Liberty’s six shore circuits are jammed. Radio operator manages to send distress signal from Captain McGonagle: “Under attack by unidentified jet aircraft, require immediate assistance.” Attack lasts approximately 22 minutes, involving 30 to 35 sorties, killing nine men and wounding around 60. Israeli pilot reports to base: “Great, wonderful, she’s burning, she’s burning.”
1409: Captain Joe Tully of the USS Saratoga acknowledges call for help, dispatches four F-4 Phantom jets, and informs Liberty that help is on the way. Within minutes U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert MacNamara orders rescue jets to return: “Tell Sixth Fleet to get those aircraft back immediately.”
What difference, at this point, does it make?

Not much, other than to the the families of the 34 U.S. sailors who were killed and 171 wounded when the Phantoms were recalled.

Islamic State militants are planning a takeover of Libya as a “gateway” to wage war across the whole of southern Europe, letters written by the group’s supporters have revealed.
Given Libya’s location, that’s not at all impossible. Europeans think they’re invincible just by virtue of being European. I’m not sure if ISIS could actually conquer Europe, but they could certainly cause an immense amount of trouble, especially in places that are already a little wobbly (Greece, southern Italy, Baltic states).

Or, they could just get fake passports and fly there. Or, since we’re told there are thousands of European Muslims being recruited by ISIS, they could just use their own passports

I suspect the actual plan is to take over Libya so they can then smuggle ISIS-brainwashed Ebola-infected Guatemalan child gang-members across the border into Arizona.
British special forces have been sent to Libya in a bid to halt the advance of the Islamic State, it has been reported.

SAS troops are understood to be preparing for an offensive involving 1,000 British soldiers to wrest back control of a dozen oil fields seized by the jihadists.

ISIS has taken advantage of the lawlessness since the 2011 ouster of Colonel Gaddafi to make large gains along the coastline, setting up its power base in the former dictator’s hometown of Sirte.

Mirroring its strategy in Iraq and Syria, the terror group has seized a number of revenue-boosting oil fields and are now targeting the Marsa al Brega refinery, the biggest in North Africa.
The Brits and the frackers are doing more to hurt ISIS than Onevermind. What we need is a tough woman in charge over there. Oh wait…
