The metaverse thread

Couldn’t find a metaverse thread, so I started one.

While I agree the Metaverse is a stupid idea, i don’t think it has anything to do with the graphics (which will surely improve rapidly). It’s more that we’ve already tried this stuff lots of times, and it turns out almost no-one wants it. Adding VR goggles won’t change that.

And that’s coming from someone who liked Second Life enough to reimplement its network protocol for no particular reason.

People want it, it just isnt good enough yet

FaceBook wasnt really wanted at first, look at it now

Or WoW. I never played it, but lots of people spend lots of time on stuff like this.

Mark Zuckerberg has the money to try and get in this early and push it until it is good enough and enough people want it

Sure, but WoW is an actual game, not a shopping simulator or whatever. Second Life has been doing all the stuff Meta want to do for decades, and it’s incredibly niche. Do you know anyone who plays it? And if not, why will they play (?) the Metaverse?

Not currently, no

And facebook just did the same thing BBSs had been doing for years, but did it differently enough and early enough

Reference the video i posted. Have you seen that movie?

5 years ago, maybe even 10
but now?

Sure, now that everyone’s grandparents are on it the kids are using clones like IG (owned by and inspired by, who again?)

It’s almost like Zuck needs to try and think about what people will be on 5 or 10 years from now and working towards that

I’m not saying I’ll use it or that it will soon be a roaring success. I just think since he has the money it is not a stupid direction to take

I wouldn’t be so sure. Every young person I know with VR loves the Metaverse, at least in short doses.

Perhaps you’re just a neo-boomer.

Once it gets to RP1, everyone will use it. No question.

Is this an academic stage of technology adoption?

Actually, this is relevant. I used to work with a prof who specialized in this area

Oh, Ready Player 1! You’re agreeing with me, just not used to that on here lately

I can’t wait for Cyberia to get up and running. You think social media are addictive. Cyberia is going to suck entire generations, entire societies into its alternate reality where everyone is god.

You guys are talking about BBS. Man, you guys are really old.

I think VR has huge potential especially if integrated into Facebook. I have to say, I was impressed with Oculus Rift / Meta Quest. You guys should try the latest iteration. It’s really cool.

I made one reference to it, to prove a point.

IG was inspired by whiskey.
It was acquired by fb after it became popular.

Yeah, I’ve seen it. It’s fun. But the metaverse in the movie is mostly about playing games.

I totally am a neo-boomer, as my posts about crypto probably demonstrate. I know people who have VR headsets, but only as curiosities. None of them really use them to game, except a few very specific games like flight sims. I’m cautiously optimistic about the future of VR but control schemes remain a huge problem.

I still don’t think that VR will somehow make people want to “play” the Metaverse, any more than they wanted to play Second Life, or any of the other full-featured metaverses that have existed over the years (Playstation Home, anyone? Habbo Hotel? That over-monetized scifi one? Virtual Toronto, or whatever it was called, that ended up pivoting to cybersex in the form of Red Light Center?)

Don’t flag me for this as I know people on this forum are quick to report, but porn industry has always been in the front line for advanced technology as long as they can utilize it. They have contents for VR. Just think of just that industry alone will bring in billions if not trillions.

There is a reason and vision why Meta lost 10 billion+ last year developing VR . There must be something more that they are seeing the general public aren’t. Either way, it depends on the young kids. If they choose it’s awesome then it’ll blow up.

I think it’s worth noting that pretty much every idea Zuck has had since the basic concept of Facebook (which arguably wasn’t his idea anyway) has been a disaster. They’ve had an endless string of poorly-executed additions which they usually end up just removing again, gradually losing market share on their core product all the while. I read the latest pivot as more desperation than inspiration.

Zuck is on the right track with this one. Once we’re able to go thru the 2D portholes of screens into the immersive, 3D world of Wonderland they’ll be no going back.

Also there is the Twitch gaming industry. There are people streaming VR
