The opening riff of “Soul Man,” alone…..a giant.
Pretty major loss for architecture. Even I’ve heard of him.
Well yes, but he was 96 so I don’t think he had any more buildings in his future. Still, a towering (no pun intended) icon in architecture.
A lot of morgue news is “Oh no, too soon!”. And of course Gehry’s death is a loss - but this is one of those cases where my response is “Wait, that person was still alive?!”
I was similarly surprised.
Looked like an interesting dude
It’s interesting the arc he took, from where he started to where he ended up wasn’t predictable.
Looked like an interesting dude
At least to a Yank, he had a decidedly English wry, dry and often goofy observational humor, seen through a lens, with his work from the 1980s and the longstanding Autoportrait series particularly good.
Article from the Economist - an interesting photographer!
“Martin Parr transformed photojournalism”

HIS PHOTOGRAPHS are immediately recognisable. Martin Parr, a British photographer who died on December 6th, aged 73, was known for using harsh flash and saturated colours, and for imbuing his images with a sense of humour. Mr Parr was more interested in photographing village fêtes than foreign wars, but the images he took abroad are among the best depictions of globalisation and tourism ever recorded. He helped to create a new visual language, redefining photojournalism in the process

Dang…brain cancer
Glioblastomas are a death sentence. They’ve killed John McCain, Beau Biden, I think Teddy Kennedy too. And that’s just the politicians I’m remembering. I know there’s a number of entertainers it’s killed. It’s pretty much the deadliest cancer you can get. Terminal in 100% of cases.
Yep. A family member had it. Gone in 6 months.
Pancreatic cancer death rate up there, too.

I remember the Vincent Chin story. Very tragic.

Friend of mine in Taichung has it. Diagnosed and surgically removed ten months ago. Affected his ability to remember words, so he has trouble expressing himself. It’s enormously frustrating for him.
He and his wife came back to Canuckland this past summer, we had a whole bunch of big and small friend gatherings and dinners and heart-to-heart talks and activities, etc. Now it’s back to Facebook Messenger video chats.
Things are “stable” right now. Whatever that means.
Sigh.
