The Morgue 2026

Didn’t like his politics, but compared to the batshit nutters at CNN now, he seems somewhat sane.

You’ve aged yourself if you remember having cable TV (before satellite TV) and TBS shows starting at :05 or :35 on the hour, in order to grab viewers who channel-surfed at :00 and :35 and couldn’t find anything to watch. Brilliant timing move.

I remember that! I also remember it was Superstation WTBS Channel 17, which I didn’t realize for a long time was channel 17 for every American who had cable tv.

I remember watching the Sunday morning movie, too. The first time (and like the tenth time) I watched The Ipcress File was on the Sunday morning movie on channel 17. Great movie.

And could catch National League games via the Braves and WTBS.

Murph. Horner. Chambliss. And Phil Niekro and his old man’s knuckleball. It felt like you were rooting for a nobody MLB team that needed fans, like they got no justice. Speaking of, David Justice.

Turner was right about that, that not only would Americans watch bad MLB long enough that he could sell plenty of ads, but that in fact they could become die-hard fans and make him rich. At least when there were like six cable channels: ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, HBO, and WTBS.

Genius media guy, way ahead of his time.

Oh man. I saw him play about 25 years ago in Massachusetts. Great show. The last of the BeBoppers.

If you’ve read ‘Persepolis’, you know what a huge loss this is.

Handy died on June 3, 2026, at the age of 81, after being found with multiple stab wounds to the chest following reports of a stabbing.[3][4] The 44-year-old suspect, Michael Gledhill, the son of Handy’s girlfriend, called 911 and said that he was the man they were looking for. He was later arrested with a $2 million bail and was charged with murder.

I realize that Tarzana isn’t the same part of LA where Rob Reiner was murdered, and James Handy was no Rob Reiner, but still seems similar.

Somewhere yesterday I read that Handy had allowed Gledhill to move into his home so his mother, Handy’s gf, could be near him. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

“Authorities said in a news release Thursday that a suspect is in custody, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, who is the son of Handy’s girlfriend.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, West Valley area patrol officers responded to a call regarding unspecified trouble in the Tarzana neighborhood around 9:30 a.m. The 911 caller reportedly stated, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Handy was found in the front yard of the home, unconscious with a stab wound to his chest. He was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics, where he was pronounced dead.”

“Police alleged Gledhill flagged down nearby responding officers and identified himself as the person they were looking for. He was arrested and taken to Van Nuys Jail, where he was booked on one count of murder, with bail set at $2,000,000. Information about Gledhill’s legal representation was not immediately available.”

He was great on ‘Buffy.’ Was also on ‘Ted Lasso’ too. 72 is way too young…
