Here’s a nice one:
John Lennon - Working Class Hero
Sorry, Ms Housecat. Another for Ms Buttercup. Don’t get into a catfight about the cat that got the butter! A new one for you next.
Grant Hart - 2541
The heroin-addled drummer of Husker Du made a classic here.
“Well we put down the money and I picked up the keys
We had to keep the stove on all night long so the mice wouldn’t freeze
We put our names on the the mailbox
And we put everything else in the past
It was the first place we had to ourselves
We didn’t know it would be the last”
[quote=“jimipresley”]Do you artless lot want to see a man in the throes of passion, knowing he’s singing one of the most beautiful songs ever written and HE WROTE IT? Well here it is anyway:
Jacques Brel - Ne Me Quitte Pas (1959)

It was never my favourite. I like ‘Marieke’, S’il te faut, and ‘Ces gens, la (here’s a fab cover … .’
And this one’s for you jp; Jef.

Lardy, boring Scouser! My dad would sing this when he was pissed. JL lost his sense of humour and humility without the Beatles. Completely indicative of the famous Scouse victim mentality! The tithead had a temperature and humidity-controlled suite to keep his and his mad wife’s fur coats in, when he wrote this.
At least Paul knew he’d becometragic.

The Blue Nile ‘Headlights on the Parade’

Maria Callas O Mio Babbino Caro
End of Don Giovanni
Di Provenza il mar, il suol

Nice!
Speaking of Bowie, my favourite:
David Bowie - Heroes (1977)
And a wonderful cover by Blondie:
AYE am the biggest Neil Young fan in the world, and AYE think this is his most beautiful song.
Buffalo Springfield - Expecting to fly (1966)
Quintessential punk pop:
The 101ers: Keys to Your Heart
Wire: 12XU
The Cure: Killing an Arab and the same track, live
and less beautiful but still qunitessential punk pop:
Dead Kennedys: Nazi Punks, Fuck Off
Great topic…
Forgive me if this has already been posted, as I didn’t go thru the thread…
In IMO the entire Cure album–Disintegration
Wow. Killing An Arab. My favourite Camus song!
Not a song, but a beautiful piece of music:
Phillip Glass - Glassworks Ending (1982)
I have no idea what most of you whippersnappers are talking about.
As we approach the Lunar New Year and have to endure the torture that is repeated hearing of CNY songs, it’s hard not to compare them unfavorably with Christmas carols, many of which are among the most beautiful songs ever written, with “Silent Night” probably at the top.
Of course, compared with CNY songs even Metal Machine Music might sound good.
Speaking of The Cure, this one’s rather pretty:
The Cure - Charlotte Sometimes (1981)
I like this version of Caruso by Andrea Bocelli:
