The National Concert Hall - Classical Music in Taipei

I just want to bring to everyone’s attention the National Concert Hall in CKS Memorial Park, a truly great hall. I was there last night for "An Evening of Beethoven, performed by the Taipei Symphony Orchestra and the Taipei Philharmonic Choir. They performed Beethoven’s Fantasia in C-, Hallelujah from Christ on the Mount of Olives, and Mass in C+. We had loge seats for the first time (Like the balcony, except on the sides), and I was impressed again with the acoustics of the hall. At the 20 minute intermission, we went out of the hall and had lattes overlooking the CKS memorial park. The musicians were good - not great, but good. The hall also wisely blocks cell phone signals, so even if you wanted to use your cell phone in the middle of a concert, you wouldn’t be able to. Everytime I go, I tell myself to do it more often - it’s such a stimulating way to see an evening, and tickets are really cheap, and parking underneath CKS is plentiful.

Of course I ruined the buzz, because two hours after the concert I went to see the Harry freaking Potter movie. Snoozerama.

How about dress. Is it formal?

Not at all. There are some elegant people out there, but mostly it’s very informal.

Add to that the audience which are really into the music and cheer especially foreign artists so much that the poor guys have to give at least three encores

It’s not formal at all (although you can dress up if you feel like it), and it has never been a problem to get tickets except for the really big events (which obviously tend to sell out months ahead). We usually just drop by after work or shortly before the beginning on a saturday night.
