The New Liberal Dictionary
Enlightened: A person who refuses to accept that socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried.

Higher education: Four or more years spent napping on desks while listening to leftist brainwashing.
Those are my favourites.

Read the article here.

If you have any definitions, post them below. Liberal only. If you want to knock conservatives, please do so in a separate thread.

This is offensive:

Who is she, Rush Limbaugh’s bitch? Not funny.

What a crock.

Here’s my definition:

Liberal: a person who cherishes and advocates freedom, equal rights, peace, fairness, knowledge, education, justice, decency, good health and a clean environment.

If it has been said once, it has been said 1000 times: Liberalism != Socialism. (!= means not equal) I roll my eyes whenever I see that tired comparison made.

If this is what happens at conservative frats, could go a long way to explaining why they turn out the way they do.

Indeed, it never did. Conservatives who bleat otherwise are “removing any doubt,” as the saying goes, when they play that tired tune.

None of these “definitions” are in the least amusing or apt. But that’s not surprising, as the columnist works for the Sun, which is a trashy tabloid one half-step higher up in integrity from the likes of the National Enquirer.

The defining trait of liberalism as far as I’ve been able to make out is “materialism”:

“a theory that physical matter is the only or fundamental reality and that all being and processes and phenomena can be explained as manifestations or results of matter b : a doctrine that the only or the highest values or objectives lie in material well-being and in the furtherance of material progress c : a doctrine that economic or social change is materially caused.”

So the set of human rights and values which seem to matter most to liberals are rights grounded in material and physical well-being and progress – the right to physical sustenance, health, education, shelter etc.

Rights and values though which aren’t essentially grounded in the material realm and “the furtherance of material progress” – God, religious faith, the human soul, freedom of speech etc. – seem to be, at most, inconsequential to mainstream liberalism if not sometimes barely tolerable.

Oh. My. God!

A viewpoint with some thought behind it. And on forumosa. Who’d a thunk it?

Not having been a member of a fraternity, I can’t say one way or the other.

My my my…certainly ruffled a few feather with this one.

Looks like libs don’t have much of a sense of humor when the finger points back at them…quite funny stuff…
It’s hardly the first time that liberals have taken the English language and made it their own. Here’s my handy glossary of commonly used leftist terms, and what they really mean:

Social justice: Spreading the misery of socialism equally throughout society.

Enlightened: A person who refuses to accept that socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried.

Journalist: A news person who, under the guise of objectivity, slants coverage to the left.

Hack: Any media member who introduces a right-wing viewpoint into a political discussion.

Balance: Left vs. far-left (e.g., Hillary Clinton debating Ted Kennedy).

Environmentalists: Celebrities who brag about their environmentally friendly hybrid cars while tooling around the world in gas-guzzling private jets. Liberals who can’t afford a car also use this label so they don’t appear pathetic to friends.

Filmmaker: Anyone who cranks out anti-Bush propaganda, like Michael Moore.

CBC: Like Michael Moore, only more bloated.

Propagandist: Mel Gibson, because he made a movie about Jesus.

Freedom fighters: Terrorists whose goal is to destroy Western democracy.

Terrorist: George Bush, or anyone who wants to harm “freedom fighters.”

Feminist: A woman who constantly points out how hard it is to get things done, because of men.

Anti-feminist: A woman who just gets things done, without the whining.

Multiculturalism: The belief that traditional Canadian values aren’t enough to make our country great.

Affirmative action: Liberal-sanctioned racism and sexism.

Quagmire: Any struggle that lasts longer than it takes for a liberal to down a Starbucks latte.

War: A quagmire to be avoided at all costs, unless it’s for the purpose of fighting poverty or homelessness – in which case no victory or end is ever necessary.

God: Pierre Trudeau.

The Resurrection: Justin Trudeau leading the Liberal Party’s new youth task force.

Higher education: Four or more years spent napping on desks while listening to leftist brainwashing.

Hidden agenda: Conservative ideas that are likely to prove more popular than liberal ones.

Torture: Frat-party activities that occur on foreign soil, in the presence of U.S. military personnel. Murder, rape and violence perpetrated by communist regimes don’t count.

United Nations: Impotent, glorified debating club in which defenders of freedom and democracy foot the bill to entertain the musings of dictators and thugs.

Bush lied: A catch-all that means, “I have no idea how to debate this issue intelligently.”
…“its the Toronto Sun…its not a real newspaper…just a tabloid…blah blah blah…”

Bingo!

Ever read “The Political Theory of Possessive Individualism”? C.B. Macpherson–old time Canadian poli-sci wonk–did a great job of making that argument.

Of course, modern conservatives (not neo-cons) are simply classical liberals, but another step or three along the argument’s road.

No ruffled feathers, just calling trash what it is. The items on the list are not only inept, they’re not funny. And that one about the torture is offensive no matter what political stripe you identify with. Perhaps it’s time for the far-right automatons to get some new material?

I peruse the Sun now and then when I come across it restaurants and cafes, on the off-chance of finding something of intelligence in its pages. But it never fails to disappoint. No matter what you think about bias in other media in Canada, the Sun is garbage, end of story.

If the list had a grain of truth in it, it would be funny. It doesn’t, so it isn’t.

You guys(?) think too much…

now whose ox is being gored… :stuck_out_tongue:

In my view Phil Ochs gave perhaps the best definitions for “liberals” that I have seen:

and of course:
I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
Tears ran down my spine
And I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
As though I’d lost a father of mine
But Malcolm X got what was coming
He got what he asked for this time
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I go to the civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don’t talk about revolution
That’s going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
And I’m glad that the commies were thrown out
From the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
And I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
As long as they don’t move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
Ah, the people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
Now I can’t understand how their minds work
What’s the matter don’t they watch Les Crain?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
Yes, I read New Republic and Nation
I’ve learned to take every view
You know, I’ve memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I’m almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like Korea
There’s no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
I vote for the democratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I attend all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
And I’ll send all the money you ask for
But don’t ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
Sure, once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
Ah, but I’ve grown older and wiser
And that’s why I’m turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I’m a liberal
The sad thing is that dictionaries are being rewritten to suit the people with power.

One just has to look at the definition of anti semitism and how it has changed over the years. They’ll prefer it that even talking about Israel would mean you hate the jewish race (even though semites aren’t the white european fake jews- who control Isreal).
Terrorism is a word that will mean any criminal (politians via the mainstream media are already making this kind of thought acceptable. i.e downloading music ‘illegally’ makes you a terrorist [up there with suicide bombers and pilots in planes].

In the future if you fart on public transport you could be deemed a terrorist.

Let’s ruffle some more feathers with my own definitions:

National Enquirer: Any printed daily leaning to the political right.

Newspaper: Any printed daily leaning to the political left.

Neanderthal: A conservative who resorts to name calling during a debate.

Intellectual: A liberal who resorts to name calling during a debate.

Freedom of Speech: The right to voice a liberal opinion.

Hate Speech: Voicing a conservative opinion.

Offensive: Anything a liberal doesn’t like.

It’s apparent that you feel persecuted, Doctor. Please lay down on the couch over there, and tell me more . . . poor poor conservative :unamused:

Bodo

Here’s an idea, why don’t you judge people’s arguments on their own logical merits, rather than slapping people with a “librul” badge. Or whatever box you want to shove people in. Labels are labels, and pretty meaningless.

Where I come from, in 1950 they weren’t polite enough to call’em “liberals”. They just called’em “n*gger lovers”. Conservatism hasn’t exactly had a great track record of being right, historically speaking.

Nobody is being shoved in a box, nor slapped with a label. If one feels it doesn’t apply to one, then it probably doesn’t. This is all generally speaking, just like all conservatives being labelled as George Dubya wannabes or neo-cons.
Agreed, but then neither has liberalism. That’s not to say there aren’t some fine and noble ideas to be found in liberalism, or even socialism for that matter, but the way many of those ideas are implemented is questionable at best. Be that as it may, liberalism doesn’t seem to be uniform throughout the world, then again, neither does conservatism.

We should also not forget that we may have varied experiences and, therefore, perspectives. I view what was written in the article from my own experience in a country where the media will spend weeks offering up the harshest criticism of a Conservative MP for something while remaining curiously silent, or even apologetic, when a Liberal MP does the same or worse.
