the Tavern’s Bangers & Mash
Tavern Captain,
A big thanks to you and all of your staff for a delightful Sunday morning of NHL hockey and a delicious breakfast buffet yesterday morning. The girls, though a little bleary-eyed from work the previous night, were very nice and offered all of us hockey fans great service and your chef really outdid himself with the buffet! Glad to hear you’ll have game 7 live on Tuesday morning and you can count on seeing me there.
The new place looks great and provides a very open and friendly atmosphere. Congratulations and best wishes for continued success.
Cheers and keep up the good work,
CK
I stopped by the Tavern twice in the last two weeks to make an opinion for myself. As a result of spending a total of approximately 5 hours there and only seeing (who I believe to be) Michel for less than 30 seconds, I
Dear Elektronisk,
Thanks for your kind words about the Fish and chips as well as the Long Island Ice Tea, I will pass it on to the Kitchen and Bar staff! Mosquitos are a bit of a problem as we have a fish pond in the court yard and Air Curtains that will almost certainly deal with it yet to be installed (hopefully this week but latest first part of next week)!
Passing on your comment about the chit chat behind the bar as well. A bit due to the fact that the girls and boys work long hours, will certainly work on this aspect of the service.
I am usually in after 7pm (when I am in Taipei) and will be happy to meet you!
Regards
Michel
I have to agree that while I am not a huge fan of sports bars, the Tavern has impressed with it’s friendly staff and amazing hospitality. The hockey games were great, with delicious buffet breakfasts! Not to mention the array of culinary pleasures that were on display opening night, provided for customers for free! It was a never ending smorgasbord of lobster, meats, salmon, caviar…wow, what a night- Michel outdid himself! I say kudos to Michel who has proved to be a generous, dedicated business man. I would suggest you check it out for yourself and would venture to say that regardless of Michel’s charms (or lack of at times…but isn’t that kind of a charm? at least it is interesting) the staff, food, games, friends and drinks are enough to make for a good evening out.
Well, the service seems to be taking a turn for the worse at the moment.
There’s a new guy working there, and these past two weeks I’ve had awful service from him. Last week it took him damn near 20 minutes to get my drink, and I had to explain to him what an “Aussie Meat Pie” (as written on the menu) was so I could have one. Then this week, I ordered the Aussie Meat Pie AGAIN and still he couldn’t work out what it was, not even when I tried in Chinese. None of the other staff members have ever had that problem. Then, with the pies, I ordered fries. I got mashed potato. Barely even an apology. Then I ordered a Coke - 15 minutes later, nothing. In between he’d gone and taken other orders and actually served them. I only got mine after reminding him.
Not. Impressed.
One more shot, and if the service next weekend is this bad, I’m going to the Brass Monkey.
Dear Tetsuo,
Sorry to hear that you had such a bad service experience, indeed unacceptable. We are doing our best to train our newly reqruited staff members. Will make sure the young chap that served you during your recent will get more intensive training. Please ask for either myself or Teresa next time and will be very happy to reward you for your patience and another chance.

Michel

As you brought it up, bring your better half of a dinner at my expense, if I am not in then ask for Teresa or Sandy who I have informed already.

You mean, cook at home, eat the lesser quality half and then bring the remainder to the Tavern and you will pay the cab fare? Novel.

Dear Michel:
I am afraid that I have several complaints.
First, the fish was too big.
Second it was too good.
Third it was too cheap.
How am I supposed to lose weight if you keep pulling this kind of shit on loyal customers like me? What are you going to do about this?
I had the bangers and mash yesterday. NO GRAVY, NO GARNISH.
Dodgy Guiness, nasty poo this morning. I thought the Kilkenny’s was excellent.
Tom.
Dear TomHill,
After reading your post, I have checked with the young lady that has taken your order. According to her, you ordered the Cumberland Sausage not the Banger. We do not serve the Cumberland Sausage Meal with Gravy, if you like Gravy with it, we are happy to add it free of charge, just mention it when you order it the next time. I got to the Bar yesterday afternoon around 4pm and was advised that you complained about the Guinness. I have then tried it myself and asked several others about it that were drinking from the same keg both you and me had a pint from and could not find anything abnormal. As far as the nasty Poo this morning is concerned, cannot quite comment on that but you drank one full pint of Guinness, a Kilkenny and had a Cumberland Sausage at our establishment early afternoon yesterday, would assume you had other drinks and meals during they day!
Please identify your self to either myself or the manageress on duty next time you come in and I will be happy to buy you a Banger and Mash (might be due to language problems you got the wrong dish, we did not have staff on duty due to the typhoon that we would normally have there on their own) and pour you a Guinness on my Tab!
Cheers!
Michel
I thank the captain for his comments, and offer of a free pint. I didnt really complain about the Guiness, I said it tasted ‘so-so,’ but Guiness drinkers are a very fussy breed. I also think that British people want their drink as a soon as possible, not when it is convenient for the waitress, but we are not in London, and it happens to me all the time in Taiwan, so I will accept that fact.
On a positive note, the tavern had an excellent lay out, and the TV’s are superb. Nice comfy sofa’s and some barstool areas too. The feel of the establishment is like a modern style British bar, and when I entered I felt in a ‘home away from home’. I would recommend people to eat there, and also go for a drink as the selection is varied and well priced. 200 for a guiness is not bad at all. And a pint of lager was just 130. Excellent.
Tom.
Yes that’s true mate. Today the Captain asked for my credentials before he attempted that, before promptly offering me an ANZAC biscuit.
Captain, 2 years ago I wrote a not so pleasant review of you and now I’m happy to take it back. Today, my mates and I went to the Tavern at 11:20 am to watch the AFL Granny. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a free VB, I belive all who arrived before either 11:30 or 12:oo were also. This is only the 2nd pub I can remember that offered a free beer on arrival, definately leaves a tasty feeling in your mouth from the offset. Not long after came the ANZAC biscuits, also free and freshly baked. The Captain was cheery and approachable and the facilities 1st class. A great day. Captain, thanks a lot. We really enjoyed ourselves. Amos.
Greetings Tavern Captain
Could you do something about the portions on some of your dishes? Last week I had bangers and mash. The sausages were great, and so was the gravy, but two eyeball-sized dollops of potato and one broccoli floret is a bit unimpressive. I had to rely on a 7-11 bien dang to get me all the way home. I wouldn’t object to paying a little extra to get a meal instead of a snack, so I hope you can tell the kitchen crew to be a tad more generous with the servings.
Best wishes
Good Evening Ellie Robbo,
Whilst most of our dishes are judged as being too large, you are right about the Sausage Dishes that more potaoe mash and esp. more vegatables should be added which will be the case in the future.
Cheers!
Michel
Yes. What is it with these ice-cream scoops of mash whereever one goes???
Alleycat, Since nobody else is listening I tell you why most places do serve small portions of Mash. Reason is YOU! Your Pizzas are too big with too generous topping hence most people then request smaller portions elsewhere as they do not want to look like the Taverncaptain.
Cheers!
Hello Tavern Captain
Thanks for the promise. I look forward to watching my next football match over a plate of mash you could hide a speckled hen in. (That’s just an off-the-cuff analogy and not a formal request, by the way).
