Chinese artist creates art work using fireworks

The drawing would be included in the retrospective of Cai’s work that opens this week at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. It is the first time the Guggenheim has devoted a one-person exhibition to a Chinese artist. That is just one of Cai’s singular achievements. His solo show in 2002 at the Shanghai Art Museum was the first for a contemporary artist in a state-operated Chinese museum. The Golden Lion he won at the Venice Biennale in 1999 was also the first time the top prize went to an artist from China. Most conspicuously, a set of 14 of his gunpowder drawings sold at Christie’s in London in November for $9.5 million, setting an auction record for contemporary Chinese art.
