I figured we needed this, after all the interest in the SCUBA thread.
I’m thinking of getting the mosquito dive computer.
There, it has begun.

What is good about it except the low price?

Well, it does essentially what the others do, and I don’t wear a watch.

Let me add my thoughts on the Stinger :
What I don’t like about it:
What are regs going for around Taipei? Xmas is a tossup before dive computer or my own regs.
I got my regulator from Royal Diving for a really good price. 11,000 or was it 13,000, I don’t rememeber, truant might help with the exact pricing. Aqualung Legend LX ACD, the price was roughly the same, or maybe even cheaper than on leisurepro.
I went thru all of this recently, so here are the prices as I remember them.
Aqualung Legend LX ACD Stage 1 & Stage 2 - around 13500 nt
Aqualung Legend Octopus - around 4000nt
Oceanic mini console SPG/Compass/Depth - around 5000nt
I bought them above all from the Royal Dive shop and they gave me a discount on the RRP for getting a bunch of gear at the same time, but also they assembled and tested the Reg set before handing them to me. I would recommend you consider that also as if any problems come up it’s easier to take the whole reg set to one place to be resolved. Besides that Mr. Lee is very approachable, and both him and Monica speak great english.
The sell Cressi Regs too and they are bloody good value. I think the range starts around 7000 for a reg set and goes up to 12000 for the titanium.
The have Cressi BCs starting around 9000 up to mayby 16000, and some nice Seaquest BCs with integrated weights upto 18500.
I ended up getting a Halcyon BP/W set up with a 30lb Eclipse Wing. RRP is around 22-24000 but I got a deal thru a friend.
Recently I spotted a deal on livingseas.com.sg/gearpage.html that was a full DIR gear set up including Halcyon BP/W, Mid range Apeks Reg set with the long hose and lanyard mod,Halcyon Knife, Halcyon safty sausage, Halcyon guide line, Halcyon Mask and a few other things IIRC for about $40,000 nt all up which I thought was a pretty good deal for quality equipment. It seems to have finished, but you might want to email them for a quote. Singapore based.
HTH anyway. I can’t remember the exact prices, as I got a deal on the overall total for buying most of the stuff at one place.
That is a tough one. Own regs means you start saving on gear rental immediately, and you have some equipment that YOU have control over it’s condition. I bought my Reg first.
The dive computer is a potential life saver alright, and getting your logs stacking up inside it every dive allows you to update your hardcopy log at your leisure. There is no harm in sticking with the Tables, but a DC cetainly makes diving more relaxing and potentially safer.
Buying gear is bloody expensive, but I figured that I might as well bite the bullet and get it all ASAP so:
I can save on gear rental.
I have gear I know I can trust, I can look after, and I can get familiar with.

You’ll be very happy with the halcyon - like I mentioned, I’ve used the same rig for 10+ yrs. The only thing I’ve needed to do is replace the webbing. But…it can be costly…some of the parts can be obtained elsewhere for less. for example the mask is just the old scubapro frameless and there are cheaper knives that function almost exactly the sames - like seaquest.
I’ve got a very old Sunnto solution…is it worth updating?
Unfortunately I have to update everything…Before next summer. I don’t even know where to begin.
Camera gear will probably be first. Right now I’m using an old Nikonos 5, which is a bitch to use effectively and is of course, film based. I’d like to upgrade to digital, but for a digital SLR to match the image quality I’m currently able to achieve with the Nikonos, I’m going to have to spend a bloody fortune.
Here’s an example of what the Nikonos can do:

Next, my dive gear is all from the early 90’s, and while still functioning is quite retro. I’m also interested in upgrading to the wing configuration, as I’m a firm believer that less is more underwater.
2007 is going to be an expensive year. :s
thanks guys
Hi all,
If anyone is interested in buying Aqualung Titan, US Divers Calypso or Apeks regs, OEM gauges, compasses and BCDs in all styles, jacket, wing and tec I can get you 30% to 35% off the shop price. Drop me a line if you are interested.
OK! Well, I stopped by Mr Lee’s place in Taipei and he hooked me up but good!
Got the same reg setup as truant, an aqualung legend with the valve that closes up the hose end when disconnected from the tank, and the oceanic depth/air gauge, and compass; no ocotpus as my bcd has one attached to it. The problem with that was there was no hose that connected it properly to a rental one. Mr Lee hooked me up with a sweet one push hose.
The cost was not a pleasing event for the wife (as it was a promised xmas gift)
19,000nt
