The Sixth Day of Creation

On the “Not all conservatives are stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives” front:

An eight-year-old girl wrote to the South Carolina legislature suggesting that the woolly mammoth be made the official state fossil, on the grounds that the first fossil unearthed in North America was a wooly mammoth (teeth, actually) in South Carolina in 1725.

Two Republicans blocked the motion, insisting on adding three verses from Genesis to the bill.

The final version contains this:

“Section 1-1-712a. The Columbian Mammoth, which was created on the Sixth Day with the other beasts of the field, is designated as the Official State Fossil of South Carolina and must be officially referred to as the ‘Columbian Mammoth’, which was created on the Sixth day with the other beasts of the field.”

I guess the double reference reflects the reading skills of South Carolinans.

Hope this doesn’t represent the general calibre of S.C. legislators.

Anyway, I thought hardline creationists didn’t believe in fossils?
