Those of you who have been following the news in Taiwan should know that a few minor celebs have been charged with assault on a cab driver while under the influence of alcohol.
Various taiwanese talk shows have been latching on this story like hyenas feeding on dead bodies. They have been trying to create this lie, this facade that Taiwan is a country where justice prevails by hitting on these minor celebs and saying these minor celebs shouldn’t take advantage of the poor and common people just because these celebs have status and power.
Excuse me… since when do these minor celebs hold any status and power in any society? Sure one or two of these minor celebs have appeared on way too many popular taiwanese variety shows but does this mean that these minor celebs hold any status and power in taiwanese society?
The real power shakers, we are talking about the taiwanese mafia, the politicians and the head of those taiwanese MNCs, hell they advantage of the poor and lower class taiwanese every single farking day so why doesn’t the taiwanese media focus on them?
We all know how many taiwanese farmers are forced to sell their farms to taiwanese property developers, most of whom are affiliated with taiwanese mafia, so why don’t the taiwanese media focus on them?
Well, I know why. Cos these minor celebs do not hold any power and status in taiwanese society. They may be famous or infamous but they do not hold the real power in taiwanese society and thus do not have the privilege of abusing their poor like how the taiwanese mafia, politicians and property developers do every single day.

I think the Taiwanese are well aware how stank the media here is. I would venture that most are as fed up with this coverage as you are and see the continued obsession as the ratings pimpin’ it is. I think an apropos follow up question might be; Is the traditional media going the way of the dinosaur? With social networking, fake news and interactive real time debate quickly replacing the 5th Estate, should these concerns be given a Viking funeral and set adrift? Witness Time Magazine’s recent trend of smearing pap on their American release covers while continuing to brave current issues on the International covers. Spoon-feeding its audience what it thinks it wants instead of the facts and the questions to dig deeper into said facts seems to be more and more de riguer in the print and broadcast outlets in these uncertain times. Freedom of the press, freedom of speech both keystones in progressive society, but the old animal is wounded and cornered and will do anything it can to survive. Glenn Beck even. Taiwanese media, being one of the free world’s worst, a living, breathing example of FOXNEWSISM gone down the rabbit hole, may be the canary in the coal mine for other concerns. I would imagine litigation, constant and exacting litigation might be the axe that finally severs the mooring to set the barge adrift. All Hail Odin!

As I noted, the Taiwanese have no exclusive to hypocrisy. But it is the Taiwan media being referred to here.
How is any society going to improve if people do not come out a lay scorn and ridicule on things that are ridiculous. We need to hold ourselves accountable.
Still we can see you are all paying just as much attention to the news as the locals. Is Western media any better when pepole have their phones hacked, a dead girl had her messages deleted off her phone that interefed with a police operation. Millions of dollars now being paid out to people whose private lives were sometimes ruined.
Is the western media any better at not going on a feeding frenzy when famous people die ao they attack someone, do they not have thousands of paparazzi following people around to get the latest photos to sell to the media. What is Tyson more remembered for, raping a worman, biting off an opponents ear, or being a world champion boxer, or his Maori tattoo, or bashing up people in car parks.

Which were crimes committed by the ilk of The Sun and The Daily Mirror, which are two papers in the UK - the tabloids geared for the idiotic masses. You’re forgetting to mention papers like The Guardian, The Telegraph and The Evening Standard, which are quite decent papers with (in some cases) exceptional journalism.
The problem with Taiwan is that I’m yet to see something of The Guardian’s ilk here.

Two guys in my adult classes are reporters for local newspapers and TV and they say they’d like to cover international news more + things that REALLY matter in Taiwan as well as go abroad more. But the powers that be tell them. “No one in Taiwan cares about those stories.” “We won’t get readers/ratings so the answer is no, cover what we tell you to?”
Probably keeps them up at night!
