The Taiwanese shuffle

So I’ve noticed that many Taiwanese do this weird hopping/shuffle thing when they are trying to hurry. They don’t really run but like bounce with their arms static at their sides. When they’re running for sports they run normally but when they are trying to catch the train or feel rushed they do this bouncy thing. What is that all about? Where did it come from?

No idea what you’re talking about, but if I were trying to catch the bus I wouldn’t run like I’m running for sports.

It’s very weird, it’s like the embarrassed run where they’re running but not really running!

Maybe we really are in our own Truman show and they’re the James Mays who never run on TV!

Have you noticed a gender disparity ? There was a time here probably before you were born when women would hide to smoke cigarettes and many would feel some social pressure not to do anything out of the norm. I had a girlfriend that shuffled like a Geisha.
As for nowadays well it’s less likely you will fall over running quickly versus speed walking , and less likely you will run into others, less sweaty too. Imagine turning up to your work place stinking and sweating of BO.

Doesn’t illustrate the issue but it is a video of someone in Taiwan running.

Inevitable. Right Guard will not help.

This isn’t what I’m talking about this one is way more normal than the Taiwanese shuffle it’s more like running to catch a bus/MRT or crossing the street ect… or because the boss told them to hurry or something like that.

I guess it’s more like to show they are hurrying without actually increasing physical exertion? I wish I had a video to show because it’s extremely common

Trying to find an example where the arms aren’t moving.

Trying to help out here. Am I close?

This is what I immediately thought the OP was talking about in the first post!

I have been digging for a video since the op started this. This gent needs to fess up evidence.

I tried, it’s really hard to find people shuffling without moving their arms.

At the very beginning of this video, there’s a oldish dude crossing the street pretty quickly. I think I walk exactly like that guy.

I would be pretty impressed if people ran like this regularly :joy::joy::joy:

I think if you could get one involving busses that would be more of what I mean.

They even do it for no purpose.

Some people are no hurry to go anywhere but they still do this random running shuffle for about 10 steps.

I sometimes roam about with a group of Taiwanese friends. Occasionally one of them will do it while we are casualy walking down the street. I asked them why and they say I don’t know I just do it.

I’ve seen it in offices. My guess is that there is a feeling of urgency or enthusiasm they want to convey. I’ve even seen skipping in the office. I hate to admit it but I do it now and Taiwanese will tell me to slow down…it’s not that urgent. We probably should run around the office a bit.
