Written by W. Martyn McClave. I’ve just finished reading this and enjoyed evey page. It is basically an autobiography of a musician’s life. In it he travels extensively to Taiwan, talks about life here and playing music in the underpasses of Taipei. He also spends a lot of time doing crappy jobs to fund his trips and put him through college. I particularly enjoyed the last third of the book when he describes hiking on the John Muir Trail.
The style is easy going and relaxed, however there is something that draws you into the book - as if you are talking to the writer. I finished this in an unusually quick time not only because it was so entertaining, but also because it is passionate and funny.
One critisism though. He mentioned getting married, all of a sudden a womanPei arrives and a kid. Even though they are briefly mentioned there is no fixed point at which, in the reader’s mind they enter the story. One minute our hero is out getting laid on a Friday night, the next he’s talking about “my wife and kid.”
Anyway, for a first time writer, this is an entertaing read. There are a couple of rants concerning California and Religion (this one nearly put me off!) but it is well worth having a look at.
Enjoy.
