The US-Mexico border thread

South American countries having low trade with Taiwan doesn’t surprise me, but India did. A fairly nearby country with a lot of people, a fast growing tech/service industry and many entrpeneurs*, I would have expected it to be one of the top partners for Taiwan.
Anyway, glad to see they’re working on it, I’ve seen many news regarding Curry/Taiwan trade recently, so it’s something they’re trying to improve.

  • = I honestly have no idea how to spell this godforsaken word, and I don’t have autocorrect here.

The “if we join China we will get rich” fable is strong in Central America. Trade, invetsment…heck, they will get brand new soccer stadiums like Costa Rica! Now, the problem with cancelling the Dream Act is two fold: One, we have a lot on instability that will be generated from that skilled labor coming back and having no place to be. Two, the funds previously gained from remesas or money sent by people working in US to Central America will also dry up. Migration to US has always been the escape valve that keeps such socially inequality societies barely functioning.

Allying with China gains public support for the elites, gives elites brownie points with the masses, just when the instability makes a mess of things. You see, up to a few years ago, Taiwan’s money in loans or donations was being pocketed by the usual gang of corrupt elites. In the eyes of locals it was all the ROC’s fault, those corrupt pro dictator rebel islanders, or so has the press fed. So basically they think China, such a big market, so much money, we will be rich! The elite gains access to buying weaponery that US won’t directly or indirectly -cough, cough- sell them, as you know, vitamins for the regimes. And down we go…

In Spanish we say: rio revuleto, ganancia de pescadores. In themidst of that mess, the winners are the vultures that strip the carcasses clean. Lots of benefits in stirring trouble.

Seems to be increasing, Im going way off topic but, but called up a online company in Taiwan I booked some flight tickets with and under the English option was transferred to an Indian speaking person, introduced himself as Rat Shit! It’s wasn’t the best of phone lines so I thought “must have heard that wrong, better not repeat that” and he was extremely helpful, polite and dealt with my inquiry professionally, and was actually really pleased to be able to communicate so well I forgot all about his name until we finish and he says clear as day “Thank you, you have been talking to Rat Shit”.

“Hello I’m Rat Shit!”
“Hello, I’m “My parents didn’t love me either”, I’d like to ask you…”

Just to show you how everything goes: illegal migrants afraid to seek safety in shelters, fear being deported more than the hurricane category 5.

That says quite a lot about their country!

And overall about their conditions:

Their bosses expect them to work no matter what, teh homes must be cleaned before they come back. Wonder what to do if the house has been washed or flown away…

Same thing was happening in Texas during Hurricane Harvey.

Yeah but Trump wasn’t in charge yet, so no one cared.

It was two weeks ago!!! Have you not seen the destruction in Texas?!

Ohhh that Harvey…damn I confused it with…what was it, Andrew? Matthew? Irma? Bloody hurricanes, all with some dude/chick name, I forget their names all the time. That’s why I live in Taiwan: Saudelor, Morakot, Meranti, Dujuan…these are proper names, ffs

Well, if it helps, the hurricane naming system is alphabetical; Harvey, Irma, Jose…

While maybe not truly 100% a border topic, the election result in Mexico is a big torpedo of that country’s political spectrum, especially as PRI has been basically imploding since 2000. [Any Mexicans here, please chime in.]

Goes to show that people globally are fed up with the status quo, whatever party/ideology has been in control.

I think this is great. Stirring the elite cauldron even more.

How will the US media handle him?

a) He doesn’t like Trump -> GOOD
b) He’s a populist -> BAD

I know nothing about him, though. Is it going to be Venezuela 2.0 or something more reasonable?

We all know the pattern in Latin America by now.

Mexico is already halfway to being a failed state. That’s why they all want to leave. It’s also a democracy (more or less) which means they have mostly themselves to blame for their problems, Which is why we can’t have them camping out in the US. They’re (mostly) not evil; they’re something worse: stupid.

Given the assimilation of most Mexicans into the U.S., I would offer that most Americans, if given an either/or choice, would prefer 10+ illegal Mexican immigrants to 1 legal Muslim “asylum” seeker.

Some pundits compare him to Trump for being a nationalist.
He’s also a socialist.

Where have I heard those two befo…oh.

There’s a contrarian theory that he’s gonna cut certain people’s air supply by attracting all the illegals back to Mexico for all the freebies.

Then, when the Mexico regime runs out of other peoples’ money and it’s the next Venezuela, we’ll have a real humanitarian crisis.

What to do then? Let in a whole lot of people who are their own worst enemy because of misguided compassion? That way everybody loses.

How about some tough love: declare Mexico a failed state and go in and occupy the parts of it bordering the US. Set up client buffer states, and tightly control their policies to be conducive to societal health. Do all this without apology and without compromise, and without any soft soap about “nation building.” Simply say “We’re not putting up with this shit on our border any more.” In substance abuse circles, they call this an…

…intervention.
