In metal we trust. Anything else – especially talk – is ultimately worthless in this culture. What kind of metal is available here in Taiwan? This is something I should have attended to a long time ago but it looks like it’s time to put it on the agenda. ---

TC, thanks for the link but I think I’ll stay away from anything lethal. Nice metal though. I’m thinking more along the lines of a readily available force multiplier which won’t end up being a ticket to death row. Something that Davey the Dutchman could have used to keep himself both out of intensive care and the hooskow. All this talk and umbrage is touching but none of it leads to anything which would have helped Davey out on the night in question. These would have made a difference though. A diminuitive “designer” pair in plastic with much sleeker, rounded contours, pulled out of the pockets and rapped together initially for deterrent effect: ![](http://www.bsproducts.net/images/heavyduty.jpg) I judge the multiplier effect to be about ten. Even a glancing blow would have significant effect. The left hand one could double for fending off blows by such things as batons. Unless somebody has a better idea I’m going to design up a pair of these up and mold them in my Taiwan factory, then put them on sale here at Forumosa. Everytime a foreigner gets beaten up in the future for minding his own business I’ll put them on sale again until word gets out that it’s not open season on whitey anymore here on Fantasy Island. ---

How about a roll of 10NT coins. Or the common butcher knife. Or just go ghetto and get a four finger ring with your name on it. I mean unless your friends with some guy that has an ongoing dispute with the bar owner over money, I think you’re safe. Usually the best way to go is just to avoid those types of “friends” and establishments all together. You never heard of anyone get beaten over a cup of 500 cc papaya milk. ---

Not ‘illegal’ per se, but questionable. This is a direct quote from a friend who owns a quite reputable store that happens to occasionally include these in her inventory. Its Taiwan…There are no laws…only suggestions. Spook - I carried a [kubotan](http://www.amazon.com/Century-Kubotan/dp/B0000AXK1N) for many years for the reason you mentioned. It also was my key holder (multiple app). I also recommended these to many people and gave instructions on their use. Quite effective…and available in many colors! There are several other personal defense tools that are rather innocuous looking and when used correctly very effective in defensive applications. Something along this line or the [koga](http://www.amazon.com/Cold-Steel-Mini-Defense-Weapon/dp/B000J3I6GS/ref=pd_sbs_sg_2/104-0931953-5883965) might be marketable. Although the key-chain utility of the kubotan is a big plus factor. One kubotan I have, which is made of metal, even un-screws to reveal a single edged blade inside. ---

You say that having a knuckle-duster would have made a difference. I don’t disagree with that, but I don’t think the difference would necessarily have led to a better result for Davey. Had he had time to get one or two out of his pocket and put them on while he was getting dragged into an alley (which I serously doubt he could), be may have been able to take out, say, two guys, but he could very well have ended up in even worse shape than he did, as that would have led to them taking out a higher level of revenge. Not only that, but he would have lost all defense arguments with the “authorities” (I put that in quotes because I realise it’s a bit of a joke here, but nevertheless I stand by what I say). I’ve been put in hospital after a good kicking by a group of guys that didn’t like foreigners (incidentally, that was in Spain). At the time I was a pretty good fighter, but seriously, when you’re literally surrounded by guys, and you’re completely on your own, sometimes it’s better to just take it, and try to defend your vital organs. What I’m trying to say is that carrying a weapon would not have helped Davey out here, and would in my opinion have made the situation worse, both physically and legally. I respect your opinion on this. It’s just that, personally, I don’t agree. ---
