Do you think Taiwanese considers themselves superior to other Asians (only second Japanese)?

of course. in asia the light skinned people look down on darker skinned people. taiwan happily buys into this system.

I have heard “I hate Japanese” and “Taiwanese men are so much more mature than Western men” a billion times. Sorry, most Western men over 30 don’t play drinking games.

They got to

All Chinese have an inferiority complex that manifests itself as looking down on others

Kinda like standing on the backs of others to make yourself look taller

Ah… the irony…

You really shouldn’t make blanket statements like that, at least phrase it into a generalization.

To answer your question, yes I think most Taiwanese feels superior to most countries in Asia, excluding Japan, Singapore, South Korea and possibly Hong Kong.

Notice how Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan are what was once known (and maybe now too?) as the “four tigers of Asia”. Basically these countries/territories are richer and more advanced than most other countries in Asia. I don’t know if it is a suprise to you, and I am not saying it’s right, but it is nothing new for people of richer countries to look down on people of poorer countries.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, for the first time the Taiwanese were allowed to travel overseas. My mother, then a 20-something, decided to go to the Phillipines for a vacation. In those days, Phillipines were considerably richer than Taiwan and they too looked down on the Taiwanese people.

When entering the Phillipines, the Taiwanese were like a bunch of criminals, being herded into a separate queue, apart from everyone else where the Philipino authorities slowly checked everyone’s luggage (in fact, so slowly that most of the time you’ll have to pay them to speed things up a bit), searched their clothes and took their finger prints, etc.

Show me a nation or race that doesn’t feel they are superior to the rest of the world. I’m sure there are plenty of people in even Bangladesh or Burkina Faso who feel their country and culture is the greatest ever. The human capacity for self-delusion is infinite.

Absolutely. And show me a place where the locals don’t have “world-famous attractions” or a culture that doesn’t have some golden age of civilization.

The poll options contradict, there should be a ‘No, but I disagree (they are superior)’ and ‘No, I agree they are not.’ instead of ‘NO’ only.

I honestly couldn’t answer the question though, never heard Taiwanese making remarks that would let me to conclude they feel superior. Perhaps I hang out with the “wrong” crowd.

Just curious… How proficient is your Mandarin and Taiwanese listening comprehension?

Non-existent - but then the Taiwanese I do know talk mostly in English to me.

Seriously though: that is just based on my personal experiences - I am not saying Taiwanese never do that.

Like mod long said, everyone to a certain degree believes that their own country/culture is superior. Given that, I have yet to meet any Taiwanese person who was so nationalistic as to rub me the wrong way. If anything, the vibe that I get from some people is a sort of ennui since Taiwan’s time in the sun has passed and all the attention is on the mainland now.

The one group of Asians that I’ve felt had the strongest superiority complex and who really annoyed me are the Koreans.

Has noone ever lived in Japan?!

I don’t think that most Japanese even consider themselves Asian.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I agree.

Although speaking from my hispanic side, I don’t feel that Mexico is better anything than anyone. Just more laid back. But that’s me. :sunglasses:
